Tech Lead at BlueGrid – Shape the Future of Marine Electrification

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia (Hybrid Work-From-Home / Company Office)

Type: Permanent Full-Time

Posted: December 19, 2025

About BlueGrid

BlueGrid is pioneering the intelligence layer for maritime electrification, enabling confident and scalable transitions for vessels, ports, and grids worldwide. In a rapidly evolving sector where millions of vessels and thousands of ports are shifting toward electrification—driven by performance, regulatory, environmental, and economic factors—we deliver AI‑powered simulation and data insights that reduce uncertainty, accelerate deployments, and unlock significant grid flexibility value. Join a mission‑driven team supported by accomplished advisors from leading energy and mobility innovators, as we build scalable solutions in a high‑growth market poised for transformative impact.

The Role

We're seeking a hands‑on Tech Lead to own our technical strategy, architecture, and roadmaps. You'll translate product vision into scalable, high‑performance systems, thoughtfully integrating AI where it adds real value, and serve as a key mentor to grow our engineering team. Importantly, this is a coding‑heavy role: 50‑60% of your time will be hands‑on development of complex features, such as advanced physics‑based simulations, real‑time data pipelines, and large‑scale data aggregation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Define and drive technical strategy, system architecture, and roadmaps in collaboration with founders and stakeholders.
  • Lead design reviews, mentor on advanced engineering, and evaluate emerging tools.
  • Design and implement scalable backend systems, with heavy emphasis on performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Spend 50‑60% of time coding critical features (e.g., real-time processing, simulation engines, data integration).
  • Integrate AI/ML effectively (e.g., for predictive modeling, anomaly detection, or optimization).
  • Balance trade-offs, mitigate risks, and guide priorities aligned with business goals.
  • Mentor engineers, conduct code reviews, and foster best practices in code quality and testing.
  • Collaborate closely with founders, operations, and developers to deliver high‑impact software powering sustainable marine solutions.
What We're Looking For
  • 7+ years in software development; 2+ in senior/lead roles with real‑time/high‑volume data systems.
  • Strong backend skills (Python, Go, Node.js) and cloud experience (AWS/GCP/Azure).
  • Experience building real‑time systems, data pipelines, or simulation‑heavy applications (bonus for physics/numerical computing or marine‑related domains).
  • Demonstrated ability to architect scalable systems and integrate AI/ML thoughtfully.
  • Excellent communication and mentoring skills; comfortable in a flat, collaborative startup environment.
  • Hands‑on leader who mentors without hierarchy, pragmatic about trade‑offs, and passionate about real‑world impact.
  • Maritime, Grid, Telematics, IoT experience a plus.
Why BlueGrid?
  • Opportunity to shape technical direction in a mission‑driven company tackling climate challenges.
  • Hybrid work, collaborative and inclusive culture, and opportunities for innovation.
  • Competitive salary and benefits in a mission‑driven company.
  • Equity in a growing startup.
