The Opportunity

We are presently accepting applications for the permanent full‑time position of Supervisor, Water Treatment with the Water and Wastewater Division.

Accountabilities
  • Supervises the operation and maintenance of the Bay Bulls Big Pond Water Treatment Plant, Ruby Line Pump Station, Kenmount Pump Station, Galway Pump Station, Paradise Pump Station and various reservoirs.
  • Supervises the work of subordinate employees to ensure effective operation and maintenance of the Bay Bulls Big Pond Water Treatment Plant, and associated pump stations and reservoirs.
  • Plans, organizes, prepares and supervises the work and schedules of staff at the Bay Bulls Big Pond Water Treatment Plant, and associated pump stations and reservoirs.
  • Ensures treated water meets or exceeds the requirements of the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality.
  • Maintains the standard operating procedures and the preventative maintenance program for the Bay Bulls Big Pond Water Treatment Plant and associated works.
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual operating budget and administers plant operations/maintenance to ensure budget projections are met.
  • Ensures that all safety and security procedures are in place and followed by all personnel.
  • Maintains and monitors adequate inventory of spare parts, supplies, chemicals, tools and equipment for the operation and maintenance of the Bay Bulls Big Pond Water Treatment Plant.
  • Calculates applicable chemical dosage rates for water treatment processes and evaluates and adjusts process units.
  • Maintains, organizes and interprets all data relating to water quality and produces water quality reports upon request.
Qualifications

Applicants must possess a post‑secondary degree or diploma in the area of engineering, science or water resources. Possession of, or eligibility to obtain a Provincial Level IV Certificate in Water Treatment Operations.

Five (5) years supervisory experience in administration, operations and maintenance of a water treatment facility.

The successful incumbent must have an excellent knowledge of mechanical, electrical/instrumentation equipment and operation of municipal water systems and a solid understanding of water treatment concepts, processes and regulations. Must be able to read and understand design drawings and have basic proficiency in Microsoft Office. A strong background and knowledge regarding instrumentation and SCADA process control systems will be considered a valuable asset.

Must have excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills in addition to proven leadership ability.

Must be able and willing to respond to emergency calls outside normal working hours as required.

A valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required (Proof of Business Insurance must be submitted upon hire).

This position is classified as safety‑sensitive. The City of St. John’s has a comprehensive Alcohol and Drug Policy to ensure fitness for work and the completion of a satisfactory alcohol and drug test is a mandatory pre‑employment requirement.

Hours of Work

8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week. The demands of the position can result in the need to work extra or irregular hours as required.
