Working hours are: Monday - Friday, 8:45am-5:00pm onsite with occasional evenings and weekends as per program requirements.

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Recreation and Facilities, the incumbent will oversee the continuum of athletics programs for the department from drop in and instructional programs to competitive sport programs. This position will oversee the programs' strategic planning, initiatives, and sport engagement opportunities for students.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and implementing overall components of sport programming including coach duties, game policies & requirements, game day logistics, spectator management, and developing an awareness of the diverse sport opportunities for students.
  • Supervising the developing content for marketing and/or promotional materials for students to understand the available sporting opportunities at the University. Experience having established brand identity for sports at UTM.
  • Keeping well-informed on changes to policies, procedures, collective agreements, and applicable sport legislated requirements, contracts with external vendors
  • Coordinating the recruitment process and training of casual staff, volunteer coaches, establishing appropriate onboarding and professional development for coaches. Knowledge of legislative requirements and policy in this regard is critical.
  • Monitoring accounts for sport programs, ensuring student eligibilities, developing budget requirements for student athlete programs and activities, works with UTM and Tri-campus partners to execute programs
  • Directing the activities of a group of staff-appointed employees all performing a similar function, developing and ensuring professional development of coaches and student athletes occurs on a regular basis.
  • Interpreting applicable guidelines and protocols to determine policy violations specifically related to safety (including concussion/Rowan's Law) and sports (example PSOs)
  • Liaising with internal and external contacts to facilitate purchasing and/or procurement processes
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant field or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Minimum four years experience in an athletics or sports environment, working with student athletes & coaches along with experience in creating and delivering instructional, drop-in, intramural & competitive sport programs.
  • Sound knowledge and proven expertise of the continuum of athletic programs designed for diverse populations
  • Demonstrated ability and experience to organize and direct activities and staff to accomplish sport programming goals
  • Direct experience managing competitive teams and athletic games/ events, and working with or directing coaches
  • Demonstrated ability and experience to effectively and proactively manage equity and diversity issues related to a competitive sports programs or in a sport environment
  • Experience working with outside vendors and establishing agreements related to sport programming
  • Understanding and experience in compliance with OCAA/USport/PSO or other regulations in university or college sport, experience in addressing issues of non compliance and resolution
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to implement an understanding of competitive sport at a university or college to further student athletes and coaches
  • Ability to engage and address equity issues in sport, proven ability to removing barriers for participation
  • Ability to manage and address competing priorities
  • Ability to negotiate and seek out partnerships with external providers to further the goals of the athletics department
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution and problem solving skills
  • Development of procedures to support safety and security for participation in sport
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, understanding of social media. Experience using Sport/Recreation databases (Fusion, IMLeagues, etc) as asset
