About the Position

This is a regular part-time support staff bargaining unit position reporting to the Dean, School of Applied Science, Engineering, Technology & Trades, working 24 hours per week at an hourly rate of $42.39.

The incumbent plans, develops, tests and implements laboratory procedures. Works in cooperation with the department coordinators of the Steamfitter, Carpentry, Electrical, and Instrumentation programs, and assists with OYAP and SCWI initiatives. The incumbent will be responsible for supporting all maintenance, organization, operation, design, installation, and planning of the various shop / lab facilities. They will be responsible for safety within the facilities\' policies. Aids students in the safe operation of equipment and is in the labs during classes when additional safety support is requested by management. To assist the faculty in lab supervision under the direction of the lab faculty and management.

Specific Accountabilities
  • Plans, organizes, and maintains lab facilities that could include repairs, preventative maintenance and inventory control. Set up equipment and materials for faculty labs.
  • Assists in the planning and specifications for altering or installing new equipment in shops and labs, as required.
  • Supports professors in various labs. Prepares instructional materials, as directed by faculty, and provides technical expertise of a specialized nature to students by demonstrating and explaining previously taught theory to students.
  • Alerts the appropriate person when supplies are low and require replenishing.
  • Evaluates equipment and other resources, obtains quotes and makes recommendations on whether to purchase or not.
  • Upkeep consumable materials and supplies-off-load and store / stock orders for all trades related programs
  • Design and modify equipment operations. Update maintenance logbooks. Organize tools and prepare for lab experiments with faculty direction.
  • Maintain all records related to WHMIS, maintenance schedules, and ongoing inspections. Identify any safety hazards and lock out faulty equipment until it is repaired. Maintain vehicle maintenance and provide advice on necessary repairs and maintenance.
  • Coordinator and faculty, this involves diagnosis and repair.
  • Accepting / scheduling and performing tasks (repairs) for other departments – Facilities Management.
