Role

The Senior Technical Writer plays a pivotal role in supporting the operational readiness and excellence of the Telesat Lightspeed network. Ideally, the incumbent is a Technologist with extensive experience in technical writing who will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and optimizing technical documentation that supports the NSO’s core teams and functions: Incident Management, Device Configuration Management, Device Software Management, Change Management, Preventative Maintenance, and Performance Management. Working closely with Network Operations, Engineering, IT, and Customer Service Centre, among others, the Senior Technical Writer will lead the creation of structured, tier-based documentation frameworks, including SOPs, training materials, troubleshooting guides, and process maps. This role is ideal for a highly organized, technically proficient individual with a strong background in satellite and network operations and a passion for enabling mission-critical workflows through clear and effective documentation.

Responsibilities
  • Documentation Strategy & Development: Lead the creation and lifecycle management of technical documentation across the Lightspeed system, including SOPs, operational workflows, and training guides.
  • Operational Integration: Collaborate with NOC, CSR, and engineering teams to ensure documentation aligns with real-time operational requirements and tiered support models.
  • Training Enablement: Develop and maintain training materials for onboarding and continuous learning across NOC and CSR teams, including visual aids, e-learning modules, and quick reference guides.
  • Process Mapping & Optimization: Translate complex technical workflows into structured, user-friendly documentation that supports automation, fault resolution, and performance monitoring. This includes the creation of process design visualizations and mapping diagrams.
  • Design & Build of Complex Documentation: Lead the design, creation, and building of comprehensive process documentation frameworks that span multiple operational domains, integrating technical, procedural, and compliance requirements.
  • Tool & Platform Management: Administer documentation platforms such as Confluence, SharePoint, and Smartsheet, ensuring accessibility, version control, and compliance.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as a liaison between technical and non-technical teams to gather requirements, validate content, and ensure alignment with operational goals.
  • Quality Assurance & Compliance: Ensure documentation meets internal standards for accuracy, clarity, and audit readiness.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify gaps in existing documentation and propose enhancements to improve usability, efficiency, and operational impact.
Education and Experience Required
  • Electronics Engineering Technologist Diploma or equivalent post-secondary education in Technical Communication, Telecommunications, or Network Engineering.
  • 7+ years of experience in technical writing or documentation in a telecommunications, satellite, or network operations environment.
  • Experience leading documentation initiatives across cross-functional teams.
  • Understanding of satellite communications, RF principles, IP networking, and service assurance frameworks.
  • Familiarity with supervisory systems, BOSS platforms, and real-time data collection and analysis.
  • Proficiency in documentation tools (Confluence, SharePoint, Smartsheet) and MS Office Suite.
Soft Skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bilingual (English and French) preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
Working Conditions
  • On site based in Gatineau QC, temporarily in Ottawa ON.
  • Availability for occasional overtime or on-call support during critical project phases.
  • Infrequent travel to national or international facilities may be required.
  • Shift work or altered schedules may be required during key operational transitions.
