Job Description

Position Purpose

The role will be responsible for standard warehouse duties of receiving, sorting, putting away, picking and shipping of various donations, primarily goods and food products for a great cause. Regular power equipment (forklift, power cart) use is required as well as a significant amount of manual work and use of computer systems to help supply donated goods to member agencies who help the needy in our communities.

Accountabilities
  • Warehouse: Perform shipping and receiving of goods.
  • Loading and off-loading of trucks using powered and manual MHE.
  • Operate various types of forklifts to move and store goods in warehouse according to warehouse layout plan.
  • Inspect goods received for quality, damage, expiry (use-by) dates; document, rotate, and store stock appropriately to ensure maximum yield is achieved.
  • Build skids of fresh, frozen and/or dry goods for delivery.
  • Sort and categorize food and non-food items.
  • Accurately count and weigh product being delivered or shipped.
  • Assist with inventory reconciliation (cycle counting).
  • Use Warehouse Management System/Inventory Management System to record and facilitate warehouse operations.
  • Perform general cleaning and maintenance tasks of warehouse, yard, and equipment as required.
  • Inspect powered and manual material handling equipment to ensure safe use.
  • Replenish/put away materials utilizing reach truck to navigate narrow aisles.
  • Order planning and order release tasks as required.
  • General: Promote the Mission, Policies and Objectives of The Salvation Army and its services in Canada.
  • Prepare, complete and submit documentation in a timely manner as required.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Adhere to the Salvation Army Policy & Procedures and Health & Safety Guidelines.
  • Wear the appropriate safety and Personal Protective Equipment and maintain a clean uniform.
  • Ensure all work is completed in a safe manner, in accordance with TSA, WSIB, CVOR, and all other regulatory requirements.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
Critical Relationship Management

Conducts Routine Interactions. Routine information.

Internal: Work cooperatively with Supply Chain Warehouse Manager/Workers, Drivers, and volunteers. External: Interact courteously and professionally with suppliers and donors.

Managerial/Technical Responsibilities

Reports directly to the Office Manager. Direct reports: None.

Financial and Material Management
  • Moderate financial responsibility: Accountable for operating and inspecting specialized equipment to sort, transport, store, and build skids. Accountable for the efficient/effective handling of goods and materials and the responsibility for distributing products to the various clients, considering warehouse stock, product best before dates, and client needs.
  • Uses or maintains organization assets in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Does not process any financial transactions with no budget responsibilities.

Working Conditions
  • Work is typically performed in a warehouse environment with exposure to handling garbage, monotony of work (repetitive tasks), various odours.
  • Work involves regular work in freezers and refrigerators with some outdoor work in winter.
  • Sustained heavy labour or working in cramped positions over considerable periods. May on occasion be required to lift, move, or transport weights up to 50 lbs but regular weights would normally fall under 40 lbs.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Education, Qualification and Certifications: Completion of some High School; Current Forklift Operators Certificate.
  • Experience and Knowledge: More than 6 months of related experience in a store or warehouse environment.
  • Skills and Capabilities: Proven attention to detail and the ability to follow legislation, directions, policies, procedures and well-defined steps.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds; reliable, self-motivated, and confident.
  • Ability to work in a team setting as well as independently; good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to adopt a flexible work schedule during peak and/or seasonal times; ability to perform several tasks concurrently with ease and professionalism.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to the Code of Ethics; able to work in a consultative, diplomatic and tactful manner.
  • Organizational and time-management skills to plan and manage the workload.
  • Acceptable criminal record check.
Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $17.20 to $20.01 with a maximum of $24.01. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
