About the Position:

The Sample Preparation Lead Hand is responsible for supervision of the Sample Preparation floor while on shift. The priority for this position will be to ensure that the department runs smoothly and that all standards are followed by the staff on shift to ensure client instructions are followed correctly. They will also be involved in the training and development of the Sample Preparation technicians.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Capable of ringing, sieving, and crushing;
  • Perform layout, verify shipment notices;
  • Scan receiving weight, screening, load, and unload ovens;
  • Create workorder, generate bag, box labels, and perform QC checks;
  • Handle special prep procedures;
  • Sample receiving and record generation;
  • Assist in maintaining shift production levels and ensures sample preparation work meets required turnaround time;
  • Maintains close liaison with Supervisors and other lab staff to ensure the smooth delivery of our services to clients;
  • Identify and assist in resolving internal and external problems when they arise;
  • Assist in the training of sample preparation staff and report their performance to the Shift Supervisor;
  • Perform basic mechanical maintenance as required;
  • Acts as a backup to the Floor Supervisor;
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Experience in managing and training staff an asset;
  • Hands‑on experience with laboratory computer systems;
  • Basic mechanical aptitude;
  • Organized and highly motivated individual;
  • Detail oriented individual with a strong commitment to quality and safety;
  • Ability to work independently and/or as part of a team;
  • Ability to effectively handle a high volume of work and time critical issues;
  • Strong interpersonal skills along with the ability to exercise diplomacy and tact;
  • Intermediate English communication skills both written and verbal;
  • Intermediate computer skills including LIMS, WebView, MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum 2 years work experience in a commercial minerals laboratory or minerals sample preparation required;
  • Forklift licence/certification;
  • Valid Level 1 First Aid certificate.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to work in a hot and dusty environment;
  • Be cleanly-shaven in order to wear protective equipment;
  • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs.;
  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  • Ability to stand for up to a full shift;
  • Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
  • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.
