Recollections Volunteer – Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region

The volunteer role engages one‑on‑one with an individual living with dementia to assist in creating a lasting Life Story book.

Life Story work benefits:

Meet once a week for an 8‑week in‑person session. Using guides and a computerized template, assist an individual to complete a 10‑20 page life story book with guiding questions and provided photographs. The first hour: work with individual; the second hour: formatting and editing the collected information.

Responsibilities
  • Meet with an individual living with dementia at the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region office once a week for 1 hour, then create and format the story page from notes and pictures captured during that hour.
  • Develop 1 page per week of the life story book using the Recollection Program guidelines and computerized life stories template.
  • Comply with the confidentiality policy of Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region and maintain strict confidence with all matters related to the Society and its clients.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Commit to attending the program weekly for 8 consecutive weeks.
  • Comfortable using computers.
  • Responsible and dependable.
Training Requirements
  • Orientation to the agency, Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region programs, policies and procedures.
  • Completion of Volunteer Training Program.
Other Requirements
  • Completion of two reference checks.
  • Clear Vulnerable Sector Police Clearance.
