Responsibilities
- Mix plaster substances in trough to preferred consistency
- Apply, stage and easy coats of plaster using trowels, floats, brushes and spraying device
- Trowel or spray coats of stucco over exteriors of homes to shape weatherproof surfaces
- Finish corners and angles and create ornamental designs in end coat, if required
- Cure freshly plastered surfaces
- Mould and deplicate decorative plaster panels, cornices and trim
- Spray acoustic substances or texture end over partitions and ceilings.
- Measure, reduce and match drywall sheets for set up on partitions and ceilings
- Position and stabilize sheets to metallic or wood studs or joists
- Cut and deplicate metallic nook beads to guard outside corners
Requirements
- Generally a high school diploma is required.
- Completion of a three- or four-year apprenticeship in plastering, drywall or turning.
- Usually requires a combination of more than three years of work experience and some high school, college, or industry plastering, plastering or turning.
- The plasterer trade certification is required in Quebec and is available, but not required, in Ontario, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.
- Professional drywall installation and finishing certificates are available, but voluntary, in British Columbia.
- Professional certification for lathes (furniture mills) is required in Quebec and is available, but not required, in all other provinces and the Yukon.
- Red Seal Certification is also offered to qualified lathes (interior system mechanics) after passing the intercity Red Seal exam.
