WAGE RATE: $40.36 - $56.30
Reporting to the Manager of inpatient Mental Health Services, the Occupational Therapist (OT) provides a range of services built on recovery model principles to clients who have significant mental illness and/or acute psychiatric mental health issues. The OT must be able to function independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team as well as work cooperatively with multiple service providers. The OT also provides discipline specific, client centred, and rehabilitative expertise. This position is targeted to work within inpatient Mental Health supporting adult and seniors mental health units with an understanding that the position can be reassigned to a different program in Mental Health according to the needs.
Qualifications / Skills / Abilities:
Required
- Successful completion of a University Degree in Occupational Therapy
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario
- Working knowledge of DSM 5 diagnosis
- Sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act
- Psycho/social and mental status assessment skills
- Ability to perform specialized functional assessments, activities of daily living assessments and apply appropriate treatment interventions
- Knowledge of and experience in Motivational Interviewing
- Knowledge of and experience in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Ability to communicate positively and professionally with family members, community providers and physicians
- Ability to write effective rehabilitation plans
- Excellent communication skills, conflict resolution and negotiations skills
- Ability to work closely as a member of a team and share responsibilities
- Excellent organizational skills and scheduling abilities
- Ability to co‑ordinate multiple departmental interests to provide quality patient care
- Ability to problem solve and make effective decisions during highly stressful and potentially violent emergency situations
- Willingness to learn new concepts and take training courses that may be directed by management
- Willingness to use personal strengths to facilitate the development of a new program
- Ability to travel when necessary
- Valid driver’s license required
- May be requested to work at other mental health areas
- Recent satisfactory performance and attendance record

Preferred
- Three years’ experience in mental health or psychiatric setting especially with the seriously mentally ill client
- Experience in crisis intervention/emergency psychiatry and working with community agencies
- Demonstrated psycho/social and mental status assessment skills with the seriously mentally ill population
- CPR and CPI Certification
