Job summary

A national native newspaper in Ontario is seeking a full-time general assignment reporter. The ideal candidate will have a journalism degree and experience in copy editing and photography. Job description

Turtle Island News, Canada’s national native newspaper located in southern Ontario is seeking a full time general assignment reporter to report on community and national indigenous news.

We’re looking for a team player with a passion for journalism and interest in seeking out news, with the ability to present news on multiple platforms including our website and social media sites.

Qualifications
• Journalism degree or diploma required.
• Ability to generate ideas and create compelling stories (news, entertainment, sports) and photos
• Experience in copy editing and photography and must own, own DSLR camera.
• Ability to write clean, concise copy; meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment; work flexible hours.
• Must have own vehicle and valid driver’s license.

*Job is located at Six Nations of the Grand River between Brantford and Hamilton Ontario. Must be willing to relocate if necessary.

Duties
Must be able to collect and analyze information about newsworthy events to write news stories for publication or broadcast: Receive assignments or evaluate news leads and news tips to develop story idea. Gather and verify factual information regarding story through interview, observation, and research. Organize material, determine slant or emphasis, and write story according to prescribed editorial style and format standards. Must be able to monitor police and fire department radio communications to obtain story leads. Must be able to take photographs or shoot video to illustrate stories. May edit, or assist in editing, videos for broadcast. May give live reports from site of event or mobile broadcast unit.
