Qualifications and Abilities
  • A valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate.
  • M Ed. In Special Education; M Ed in Inclusive Education; or Diploma in Special Education preferred.
  • Required courses include: Masters Ed. Course Principle of Assessment, M Ed. Course in Individual Testing or Assessment for Learning one, M Ed. Course in Programming for Exceptionalities or Programming for students with learning differences and Curriculum practices for at risk students.
  • Completion of/or willingness to complete the AVRSB New Resource Teacher Program.
  • The successful applicant will be required to provide a Criminal Record Check and a completed Child Abuse Registry – Request for a Search Form.
Responsibilities
  • Provide quality instruction within the framework established by the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
  • Demonstrate knowledge through experience and/or training with students with academic and behavioral and/or social emotional needs, including life skills.
  • Demonstrate competency formal, individualized student assessment.
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, including report-writing.
  • Be familiar with a wide range of exceptionalities, learning and behavioral challenges, sensory deficits, and their implications for successful educational programming.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work as a team member in all phases of educational programming.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all pertinent provincial and board policies related to student services.
  • Demonstrate skills in communicating and working in collaborative partnerships.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work closely with Educational Assistants to ensure appropriate educational programming.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a variety of teaching models (group, individual, co‑teaching, learning centre.
  • Implement strategies, activities, and techniques for promoting student learning based on each patient’s prior knowledge, skills, and learning needs.
  • Demonstrate best practices in assessment to determine next steps.
  • Attend and actively engage in meetings and ongoing professional development.
  • Maintain and submit all records in online systems and other communication avenues.
