Job Profile

Under the general supervision of the Public Works Lead Hand, the Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of LGD vehicles, heavy equipment, and small engines used throughout the Public Works and Utilities Divisions.

This position may be filled by either a Red Seal Automotive Service Technician (AST) or a Red Seal Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (HDET). The Mechanic ensures that all equipment is maintained in a safe, reliable, and service-ready condition in accordance with manufacturer specifications, provincial safety standards, and the LGD’s preventive maintenance program.

As part of the Public Works team, the Mechanic may also perform labour-related and equipment-operating duties in support of road maintenance, snow removal, and other operational requirements as needed.

As the Mechanic, you will:
  • Perform inspections, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on light vehicles, heavy equipment, and small
  • Diagnose and service hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, mechanical, and fuel
  • Conduct engine, transmission, brake, steering, and suspension
  • Perform welding, cutting, and fabrication work for equipment repairs or
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, servicing, and repairs in accordance with LGD asset- management
  • Support fleet management activities including preventive-maintenance scheduling and lifecycle assessments.
  • Maintain fleet compliance records under the Highway Traffic Act and Motor Carrier Safety Fitness Program, including support of New Entrant Training (NET)
  • Order, manage, and maintain inventories of parts, oils, lubricants (grease), and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) for all municipal equipment, ensuring adequate stock levels to support safe and timely repairs within approved
  • Operate municipal equipment and assist with snow removal, road maintenance, and general Public Works operations as
  • Perform other related duties consistent with the classification, as
  • Ensure compliance with Worker’s Compensation Legislation, Human Rights Legislation, safety regulations and safe work practices.
Your Education and Qualifications Include:

Valid Red Seal Certification as an Automotive Service Technician or Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (recognized by Apprenticeship Manitoba).

  • Minimum Grade 12 Diploma or GED
  • Minimum five (5) years of relevant mechanical experience, preferably in a municipal or fleet
  • Valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and fuel
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret OEM manuals, specifications, and technical
  • Proficiency in welding and fabrication techniques (certification considered an asset).
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts (including suppliers), contractors and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel) and electronic maintenance records or CMMS
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions and regulations that are applicable to the position’s area of work.

  • Possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 driver’s
  • Completion of New Entrant Training (NET) certification is required; the position may be designated as the LGD Compliance Officer under the Motor Carrier Safety Fitness
  • Must possess, or be willing and able to obtain within six (6) months, the following certifications:
    • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Training (includes Safety Data Sheets awareness)
    • Forklift Operator Safety Training
  • Emergency First Aid Certificate (St. John Ambulance or equivalent CSA-approved provider)
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Certification
  • Air Brake “A”
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, including lifting up to 50 lbs, working in shop and outdoor environments, and exposure to varied weather
  • Must be willing and able to respond to emergency call-outs and work overtime as
  • Must provide personal hand tools appropriate to the trade; the LGD supplies specialty and diagnostic equipment.
