Manager, Sustainable Livelihoods and Traditional Knowledge

Department: Environment and Climate Change

The mandate of the Department of Environment and Climate Change is to manage land, water, air, wildlife, and forests. This includes promoting, planning, and supporting the wise and sustainable use of natural resources, and protecting, restoring, and stewarding the environment for the social and economic benefit of all Northwest Territories residents.

The Manager, Sustainable Livelihoods and Traditional Knowledge is responsible for managing the planning, development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the delivery of innovative on-the-land programs and services, in the areas of sustainable livelihoods, traditional knowledge, Indigenous and community-engaged research, on-the-land collaboration and public education and outreach.

In championing on-the-land initiatives, you will conduct and direct research and analysis and provide recommendations on issues related to the delivery of programs and services and develop best practices and approaches to advance on-the-land programming.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides vision and strategic leadership to champion innovative on the land plans and programs integrating on-the-land activities.
  • Provides expert advice on on the land activities, traditional knowledge, sustainable livelihoods, Indigenous and community engaged research and public education and outreach.
  • Provides clear leadership to the development and implementation of multiple action plans and policies.
  • Overseas the administration of the Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur Program.

The ideal candidate will possess expert knowledge of sustainable livelihoods and traditional knowledge and policies. Some of the key qualifications include:

  • Knowledge and appreciation of traditional, local and Indigenous knowledge and their application in programs, research and departmental decision‑making.
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of natural resource management, Northern culture, community needs and land‑based programming.
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills in a cross‑cultural environment.
  • Excellent research, analytical, problem solving and strategic planning skills.
  • High degree of adaptability and initiative.
  • A degree in a relevant social science discipline, including natural resource management, Indigenous studies, geography, sociology or education, with a minimum of five (5) years experience with community‑based programs and/or research.
  • Equivalencies can include:
    • A master in a relevant social science discipline, including natural resource management, Indigenous studies, geography, sociology or education, with a minimum of three (3) years experience with community‑based programs and/or research.
    • A diploma in a relevant social science discipline, including natural resource management, Indigenous studies, geography, sociology or education, with a minimum of seven (7) years experience with community‑based programs and/or research.
