Overview

Reporting to the Vice President Indigenization, and in collaboration with staff, students and community advisor committees, the Manager, Indigenous Initiatives and Inclusion, is responsible for the development and delivery of policies, programs and services that encourage and support Indigenous and inclusion initiatives at CNC.

The Manager will:

  • Advise on program planning and priorities, services, policy and procedures to facilitate the access, transition, retention and success of Indigenous students.
  • Engage in change agent leadership practices to build an inclusive culture of knowledge, transparency and learning with reciprocity and collective development.
  • Promote an environment of cultural safety and support Indigenization through a change management approach through the ARC.
  • Regularly partner, collaborate, and report outcomes of Indigenous-related efforts to the VP Indigenization and the college community.
  • Consult with internal and external partners to operationalize the Indigenous Education workplan.
  • Track outcomes of Indigenization and report progress to the VP Indigenization and college leadership.
  • Supervise day-to-day work of ARC staff and Indigenous Advisors & Community Liaisons at each campus.
  • Contribute to the college’s vision, mission, and goals and support learners’ needs; promote a positive work atmosphere with professional interactions.
Specific Duties
  • Supervise and mentor Aboriginal Resource Centre (ARC) staff and Indigenous Advisors & Community Liaisons to plan and offer holistic and inclusive cultural supports.
  • Collaborate with community campus staff to align and activate student supports and services.
  • Represent the College at events pertaining to Aboriginal/Indigenous education within the CNC region.
  • Inform Indigenous programming with evidence-based practices and current research on student success.
  • Support Strategic Plan priorities and maintain communication with the Yinka Dene Council as required.
  • Track, report yearly on funding opportunities, and renew grants as applicable.
  • Foster open, respectful relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administration to meet Indigenous learners’ needs.
  • Work with Student Affairs to enhance services for Indigenous students.
  • Engage Indigenous students and staff voices in program delivery across the College and ARC.
  • Develop and support recruitment and retention strategies for Indigenous students in collaboration with Strategic Enrolment Management teams and Academic Schools.
  • Ensure adherence to College policies, procedures, and collective agreements.
  • Promote a culture of responsibility, relevance, respect, reciprocity, acknowledgement, and recognition.
  • Analyze and summarize data on enrolment, outcomes, costs, demographics, and related indicators.
  • Mentor staff, support performance, and provide professional development within the portfolio.
  • Collaborate with the Elder/Cultural Advisor to foster a culturally safe environment for Indigenous student success at CNC.
  • Represent the College on community and other committees as required.
  • Support coaching and mentoring; embrace Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Reinforce the connection between day-to-day tasks and long-term organizational goals; report ARC activities to the VP Indigenization in consultation with the Elder & Cultural Advisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a discipline relevant to post-secondary Aboriginal education or related field; Master’s degree is an asset.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ full-time administrative/management experience in Indigenous education within a post-secondary institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of Indigenous communities in Northern British Columbia and Indigenous student success in post-secondary environments.
  • Commitment to the 94 Calls to Action and knowledge of UNDRIP and DRIPA.
  • Commitment to student success in safe, inclusive learning environments.
  • Ability to create a positive, student-centered working environment and provide high-quality service to students and staff.
  • Cultural competency in social, cultural, and diversity issues; knowledge of Indigenous student success literature and evidence-informed practices.
  • Excellent communication skills, conflict management and dispute resolution abilities.
  • Ability to network and build effective internal and external relationships; experience working with Elders and Knowledge Holders.
  • Experience leading organizational change using structured change management methodologies.
  • Experience in human resources, budget development and related administrative areas.
  • Knowledge of service design, development, delivery, and evaluation in a post-secondary setting.
  • Understanding of provincial and national post-secondary education systems.
