A healthcare organization in Nanaimo is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse to perform assessments and provide personal care as part of a multidisciplinary team. Qualifications

  • Completion of a perinatal education program or 1 year of recent perinatal experience required.
  • MHSU roles require additional education for dealing with Mental Health and Substance Use.
  • Two years of recent surgical and preadmission clinic experience for Hip and Knee Clinic positions.

Position Overview

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The continuous improvement of quality and safety is inherent in this position.

Under the supervision of the Manager or designate and as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Licensed Practical Nurse, Full Scope, performs assessments, plans and provides personal care, and executes nursing procedures. This role operates within the competency guidelines and full scope of practice as defined by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, along with agency policies, standards, and unit-specific protocols.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing LPN.
  • Perinatal positions require either (a) completion of a perinatal education program plus breastfeeding course; or (b) at least 1 year of recent (within the last 2 years) acute perinatal experience. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within the past 2 years is also required.
  • MHSU roles require additional education as outlined by BCCNM for practice involving Mental Health and/or Substance Use disorders.
  • Hip and Knee Clinic positions require two (2) years of recent, related surgical and preadmission clinic experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Skills and Abilities
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with residents, families, colleagues, the multidisciplinary team, and the public.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others.
  • Organizational skills and ability to implement a care plan.
  • Knowledge and competencies to work at full scope of practice, including medication administration, as required by BCCNM.
  • Ability to operate related medical equipment.
  • Physical capability to perform duties.
