Job summary

A prominent health service provider in Sundre is seeking a Laboratory Assistant I to join their dedicated team. This role requires completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program and allows you to perform a variety of laboratory functions including specimen procurement and testing. Applicants should have experience in a healthcare setting, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently. This casual role offers shifts across various times and includes on-the-job training for blood collection procedures.

Qualifications

Sundre Hospital is an acute care hospital with a busy emergency department as well as acute care, and long‑term care departments providing service for the community and surrounding area. This is a working level Laboratory Assistant I position utilizing technical skills and judgment performing a diverse range of procedures within the scope of practice of a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA). Qualified MLA's will be considered for this position. Applicants must be able to work independently and perform all aspects within the scope of practice of an MLA including all specimen procurement and blood collection procedures as well as cardiology and urinalysis including microscopic analysis.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications

Cardiology training and experience including ECGs and Holter Monitors. All blood collection procedures including venipuncture, micropunctures, blood culture collection as well as collections on all patient ages including newborns, pediatrics and geriatrics. Equivalencies may be considered. Equivalency is defined as completion of a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) and/or Combined Laboratory and Xray Technologist (CLXT) program in Canada; completion of a Medical Lab Technician/Technologist program outside of Canada; and/or MLT or CLXT students who have completed their phlebotomy training/rotation. Applicants with a high school diploma may be considered. Upon hire, you will be required to complete on‑the‑job phlebotomy training provided by APL at no cost, and formal training courses offered by SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) or NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology). The costs associated with these formal training courses will be your responsibility. You will be required to complete these training requirements within your probationary period, as per the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) collective agreement.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum 2 yrs experience in a healthcare setting. Familiar with Clinitek Status. Experience with Muse and Cardioday. Recent experience with Epic Beaker. Current registration with CSMLS. Ability to communicate effectively in English. Good organizational skills and ability to assume responsibility. Good interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work independently and promote teamwork. Receptive to new ideas and change. Urinalysis training including recent macro and micro u/a experience.
