Job description

Thurber has an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Calgary, Alberta.

Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.

As our Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinating and carrying out geotechnical investigations and supervising implementation of geotechnical designs and other construction monitoring services;
  • Undertake analysis and design tasks, summarize, review, and interpret laboratory data;
  • Overseeing installation of geotechnical instrumentation as well as routine monitoring of instrumentation;
  • Scoping projects and assisting in the preparation of proposals as necessary;
  • Provide mentoring, coaching, and training of staff;
  • Establishing, developing, promoting, and maintaining relationships with Clients and contractors;
  • Potentially manage projects and lead multidisciplinary teams.
Required Qualifications
  • Completion of a post-secondary program in Civil or Geological Engineering;
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in the Geotechnical or Geological Engineering field. Local Canadian experience is strongly preferred;
  • Experienced with field investigation techniques such as soil logging (auger drilling, sonic drilling, etc.), SPT, and CPT;
  • Experience with construction monitoring. Comfortable working in a variety of environments, including local and remote construction sites;
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers license;
  • Comfortable driving mid to full-sized pickup trucks in urban, rural, and construction environments;
  • Proficiency with spoken and written English language is required;
  • Membership with APEGA and/or EGBC.
Other Desirable Attributes
  • Graduate Degree (Masters or higher);
  • Professional Designation (P.Eng.) with APEGA and/or EGBC;
  • Experienced in the use of commercial geotechnical analytical software packages, such as GEO-STUDIO, Plaxis, Soilvision, Settle3D, LPile, etc.;
  • Familiar with geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring;
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word-processing);
  • Ability to work independently and cooperate with a team in various environments.
Additional Information
  • Criminal Record Check may be conducted;
  • Drug and alcohol testing may be required prior to accessing client sites;
  • 3 Year Driver's Abstract and a Claims Experience Letter will be requested.
