Job description

POSITION TYPE PERMANENT, FULL-TIME (Requires some evening and weekend)

Background :

Reporting directly to the Program Coordinator, the In-House Healing Counsellor will provide one-on-one counselling sessions, engaging sharing circle groups, as well as facilitate educational and culturally based activities that include cultural awareness, cultural teachings, and ceremonies. The counsellor will work collaboratively with the Executive Director, Program Manager, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers to ensure services are grounded in culturally safe and abstinence-based, and trauma-informed recovery models.

Required Qualifications :

  • Addictions Counselling Diploma or Related Certificates.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in addiction recovery or trauma counselling, ideally in a residential or community setting.
  • Experience in Group Facilitation and Presentation.
  • Lived experience or strong understanding of Indigenous identity, culture, and the impacts of colonization.
  • Knowledge of abstinence-based healing frameworks, 12-Step integration, harm reduction perspectives, social factors strength-based approach, trauma- informed care, and community capacity - based models and solution focused.
  • A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.
  • Certified with the AAC, CAC I, or CAC II in good standing is considered an asset.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • Clear Adult and Child Abuse Registry Checks.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation (asset).
  • First Aid / CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, and Suicide Intervention (ASIST) certification (assets).

Essential Requirements :

  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy in documentation and maintaining records within accreditation requirements.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills; able to build respectful relationships with Relatives, staff, Elders, and partners.
  • Effective listening observations & facilitation skills to effectively assist relatives and provide appropriate treatment and consultation.
  • Ability to be flexible with the developed curriculum for in person and group sessions and adjust curriculum accordingly when appropriate while still adhering to accreditation guidelines.
  • Ability to speak and understand a First Nation’s language is considered an asset.
  • Strong non-judgmental problem-solving ability, conflict resolution and decision-making skills.
  • A minimum of 2 years of sobriety and a substance-free lifestyle is required.
  • Physically capable of providing service in a wide variety of community settings under varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Occasional travel for conferences, workshops, and community events.
