The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is responsible for establishing and managing public infrastructure, including: provincial highways and roads, highway bridges and structures, water and flood control works, and northern airports and marine services. It develops, communicates and administers motor carrier regulatory and safety services. The department also oversees and coordinates emergency preparedness, emergency response and disaster recovery to prevent the loss of life and minimize damages to property and the environment.

Duties:

The Highway Field Inspector reports to the Highway Resource Manager and receives Lead Hand direction from the Highway Construction Technician. The Highway Field Inspector performs routine technical work/support while adhering to department standards, specifications, policies, and procedures.

Qualifications:
Essential:
  • Completion of a Civil Engineering Technology Diploma, Civil Technician Diploma or completion of Department Level One training courses. An equivalent combination of education and training may be considered.
  • Experience in roadway construction survey, checking, scaling, and/or inspection.
  • Knowledge and understanding of occupational, safety, health & risk management policies and procedures.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to professionally and courteously engage with internal and external contacts (colleagues, the general public, contractors, etc.).
  • Excellent written communication skills with the ability to prepare clear and concise reports, worksheets, and daily diary logs.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
Desired:

  • Knowledge of department construction specifications, procedures and guidelines as it relates to Checking, Scaling, Aggregate Testing, Density Testing, Survey.
Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must have a valid Manitoba Class 5F Driver's Licence without restrictions.
  • Must have the ability to travel (day or night conditions) within the province (by air or land).
  • Must be able to work extended and irregular hours (i.e. shift work, weekends) with possible overnight stays in a camp environment, under adverse weather conditions (rain, snow, cold, heat, etc.).
  • Must be physically capable of performing all of the job duties of this position, such as, Lifting and/or carrying 0-25 kg, walking (rough terrain), sitting (prolonged periods), standing (prolonged periods), climbing (stairs/ladders), crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting, operating vehicles and wearing personal protective equipment.
