Responsibilities

Fourth Engineer

Primary Location: Howe Sound, BC

Employee Status: Full-time/Rotational Contract

Accommodation: Camp-based accommodation is available

Salary Range (day): $280.00 to $490.00

The Opportunity

The Fourth Engineer of the passenger transfers vessel. Main duties related to the safe transfer of personnel, and emergency response as required. Ensure the safety of life, the vessel, and the prevention of marine pollution while working within the established health and safety guidelines, policies, and procedures of the Company.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities and essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Engine Operation
  • Responsible for operating and controlling the ship engine, propulsion systems, and auxiliary equipment to ensure the vessel's proper and efficient functioning during voyages.
Maintenance and Repair
  • Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems to prevent breakdowns and malfunctions. Including engines, generators, pumps, and other essential machinery.
Safety and Compliance
  • Responsible for conducting safety drills and maintaining safety equipment.
Watchkeeping
  • Continuous watch over the vessel's machinery and systems, monitoring for any irregularities or issues that may arise.
Troubleshooting
  • Responsible for diagnosing issues and implementing appropriate solutions promptly and efficiently.
Record-Keeping
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance, repairs, fuel consumption, and other important data related to the vessel's operation.
Environmental Compliance
  • Oversee the proper disposal of waste, fuel usage, and compliance with environmental regulations to minimize the ship's impact on the marine ecosystem.
Emergency Response
  • In case of emergencies, ship engineers play a vital role in responding to situations such as fires, flooding, or other crises, working with the rest of the crew to manage and resolve the issue.
Training and Guidance
  • Senior ship engineers often provide guidance and training to junior engineering staff to ensure the proper transfer of knowledge and skills.
Communication
  • Effective communication with the ship's officers, crew members, and other engineering staff is crucial to maintain smooth operations and address any engineering-related concerns or tasks.
Qualifications
  • Valid 4th engineer watchkeeping COC
  • Must have sailed as 4th Engineer on motor ships
  • Valid Seafarers Medical certificate
  • Valid STCW courses
  • ECDIS generic training
  • Advanced First Aid an asset
  • Ability to clear a drug and alcohol test prior to hiring and potential random tests throughout employment with prior notice.
  • Reliable mode of transportation & valid class 5 driver’s license
  • Fluent communication in English
Working Conditions
  • Frequent standing, bending, twisting, and walking throughout the shift.
  • Frequent situations where maintaining balance is essential
  • Frequent kneeling
  • Exposure to environmental elements including extreme weather conditions.
  • Frequent lifting, pulling pushing up to 50lbs
  • Occasional ascending or descending ladders, stairs, and ramps
