Job summary

A recruitment firm in Durham Region, Ontario is seeking an experienced accountant to maintain financial records and assist with budget preparation. The ideal candidate will have a degree in Accounting and at least 5 years of nonprofit experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with Sage accounting software are essential. The position offers a pay range of $30-$35 per hour, and candidates must reside in the Greater Toronto Area and be permitted to work in Canada.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • CPA designation or progress toward CPA is an asset.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate financial records in compliance with GAAP.
  • Prepare journal entries, reconcile accounts, and process payroll.
  • Provide monthly financial reports to the Executive Director.

About the Opportunity
  • Maintain accurate financial records in compliance with GAAP, agency policies, and Ministry regulations.
  • Prepare journal entries, reconcile accounts, and process payroll on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Monitor income and expenditures and provide monthly financial reports to the Executive Director.
  • Assist managers and supervisors in understanding and tracking their departmental budgets.
  • Support the preparation of the annual budget, forecasts, and funding reports (e.g., TPAR).
  • Assist with the annual audit by preparing schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Complete statutory filings, including the Registered Charity Information Return.
  • Administer employee payroll, benefits, and RRSP contributions in coordination with HR.
  • Maintain accurate records for agency insurance, property, and equipment.
  • Provide general financial support and respond to inquiries from staff and management.
About You
  • College or university degree in Accounting or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • CPA designation or progress toward CPA is an asset.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with Sage accounting software.
  • Familiarity with ADP Workforce Now is an asset.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly.
Pay Range

$30- $35 per hour
