Job description

About Helio Urban Development

We're a design-build company specializing in small multi-unit developments (4-12 units) optimized for CMHC MLI Select. We build every project ourselves using standardized, modular designs—same floor plans, same wood-frame construction, same foundation systems.

We need a structural engineer for occasional contract work when our projects require elements beyond Part 9 prescriptive limits. Clean, efficient structural design for straightforward residential buildings.

The Work

Scope per project:

  • Foundation design for challenging sites or custom requirements
  • Beam and column sizing beyond prescriptive spans
  • Retaining wall design when needed
  • Custom structural elements as required
  • Integration with our architectural and civil packages

Typical turnaround: 3-5 business days per project

Volume: 1-2 structural packages annually (occasional basis)

Project type: Simple Part 9 residential - mostly wood frame with occasional custom elements

What Makes This Attractive

Standardized approach: Similar building types mean you develop efficient standard details

Quick money: Small scope, fast turnaround, good compensation for minimal time investment

No project management headaches: We handle permitting, coordination, construction - you just deliver stamped structural drawings

High-performance team: Work with other results-driven professionals who respect your time and expertise

Growth potential: If you can handle other disciplines (electrical, HVAC, plumbing), significantly more work available

Compensation

Fixed fee per project - quote your rate for typical structural elements

Fast-pay: Net 15 payment terms

Repeat client: Steady relationship as we scale, predictable scope when needed

Requirements
  • P.Eng. (Structural) licensed in Nova Scotia + Certificate of Compliance
  • 3+ years residential structural design experience
  • Proficient with wood design and foundation engineering
  • Experience with Part 9 buildings and prescriptive vs. engineered approaches
  • Available for occasional 3-5 day turnarounds
Major Bonus

Multi-discipline capability: If you can also handle electrical, HVAC, or plumbing engineering, we have significantly more contract work available. Our ideal scenario is working with fewer engineers who can cover multiple disciplines.
