Qualifications

Duties and Responsibilities

The Campus Safety Officer position is responsible to maintain a safe and secure environment for the university community. Their primary responsibilities revolve around the protection of students, faculty, staff, and visitors on campus. Campus Safety Officer’s aim to prevent and respond to incidents that may compromise the safety, well-being, or security of individuals or property within the campus community. Duties include, but are not limited to:

• effective investigative skills to enable an individual to gather accurate information, identify inconsistencies, and draw logical conclusions, all while maintaining objectivity and confidentiality.
• ensure the safety and security of individuals on campus by working to deter and prevent crimes, respond to emergencies, and implement safety measures to protect the campus community.
• conduct patrols, monitor surveillance systems, and enforce campus policies to identify and address security vulnerabilities - aim to deter criminal activities and maintain a secure environment.
• act as the first responders to emergency situations on campus - trained to handle various types of emergencies, including medical incidents, fires, natural disasters, or other critical incidents. Their purpose is to mitigate risks, provide assistance, and coordinate emergency responses to protect lives and property.
• build positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, and other community members - actively engage with the campus community, participate in events, provide information on safety resources, and act as a resource for addressing safety concerns.
• serve as a resource for the campus community, providing information, guidance, and support related to safety and security matters - offer assistance, referrals, and access to campus resources to address the needs of individuals who require support or information.
• enforce campus policies, rules, and regulations to maintain order and ensure compliance within the campus community - address violations, issue warnings or citations when necessary, and collaborate with other campus departments to promote a safe and respectful environment.
• serve as a liaison with local law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, and other external entities - collaborate, exchange information, and coordinate efforts to address safety concerns, investigations, or emergency situations that extend beyond the campus boundaries.
• provide training and educational programs related to safety and security - develop and deliver workshops, presentations, or informational sessions on topics such as personal safety, emergency preparedness, crime prevention, or other relevant areas to enhance the knowledge and awareness of the campus community.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have a two year Community College diploma in Police Foundations, Crisis Intervention or Social Services plus a minimum of one (1) year of previous related job experience. A combination of education/experience will be strongly considered for this role. Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Power Point. Skill in operation of communication tools, equipment, computers and relevant software. Proficiency in presentation skills. Must have the ability to communicate ideas clearly, confidently, and persuasively to a variety of audiences. The successful candidate should also have the ability to organize content logically, use visual aids effectively, and adapt their delivery style to suit different contexts. Ability to utilize computer technology used for communication, data gathering and reporting. The following are mandatory certifications that are required for this role: Security Guard License; First Aid, CPR and AED Certification “safeTALK’ (Suicide – Alert Training); ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training); Mental Health First Aid Certification; Violent Threat Assessment Training; Valid G drivers’ license; Clean Drivers Abstract and Vulnerable Sector Police Check.
