Description

The Division of General Surgery in the Sprott Department of Surgery at the University Health Network and the University of Toronto is inviting applications for the position of an Academic Acute Care Surgeon. This appointment is for a full‑time faculty position in the Division of General Surgery at University Health Network. The potential start date of this position is April 1, 2026.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will provide comprehensive clinical care in Acute Care General Surgery, participate in the division’s on‑call schedule for emergency general surgery coverage, and hold regular outpatient clinics to support continuity of care for surgical patients. The candidate will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and be actively engaged in supporting high‑quality, patient‑centred care. There is no anticipation of future opportunities for elective surgical care in this role.

The candidate will lead innovative research and educational initiatives that advance the field of Acute Care Surgery.

Qualifications

• Eligible for appointment at the academic rank of Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto.
• MD degree and certification in General Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or eligibility for such certification, and licensure or eligibility with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
• Completed a residency program in General Surgery and an Acute Care Fellowship (or equivalent).
• Outstanding technical skills, ability to work within a multidisciplinary team, and ability to teach trainees at all levels.

Research Interests and Expectations

Research interests may include surgical education, quality improvement, innovation, and/or surgical outcomes. Evidence of productivity, distinction, and potential to become an international leader is essential. Candidates should be eager to help build a strong Acute Care Surgery service within the hospital system.

Compensation and Start‑up Support

Start‑up educational support and mentoring will be provided. Starting salary will be between $500,000 and $600,000 (CAD) and commensurate with qualifications and experience, based on fee‑for‑service billings and support from the UHN Division of General Surgery Associate Practice plan.
