Assistant Business Representative
bJob Description:
Reporting directly to the Director of Operations, and up to the President, while taking daily direction from the Business Representative, the Assistant Business Representative assists the Business Representative in actively pursuing production work and promoting British Columbia and the Yukon as a filming location.

bResponsibilities:
- Assists the Business Representative in actively pursuing production work and promoting British Columbia and the Yukon as an internationally renowned hub of motion picture production.
- Pursues and develops functional and productive relationships with local film and television interest holders to further initiatives in the BC motion picture industry.
- Assists with providing insight and consultation to inform marketing and advertising initiatives as assigned, locally, provincially and internationally.
- Attends and reports on industry meetings with critical Interest holders and labour representatives as well as committees assigned by the Business Representative.
- Assists in representing the BC Motion Picture Industry workers and advocating to government at all levels: civic, provincial and federal.
- Participates in maintaining a list of active film and television producers and productions in British Columbia.
- Promotes and fosters positive relationships with all interest holders, including workers, employers, the organizing team, IATSE 891 in all aspects, and organizers at other unions and labour organizations.
- Promotes and participates in communication and activities to educate both workers and employers on the benefits of representation by IATSE 891.
- Supports the Business Representative with all aspects of workforce development as assigned.
- Assists in facilitating interactions with regulatory bodies in British Columbia that impact the work of IATSE 891 and its members.
- Assists in furthering the work of Reconciliation, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) to actively improve working conditions for all members of IATSE 891 and improve access to the motion picture industry for equity-deserving groups.
- Assists in supporting collaborative initiatives focused on workforce development and diversification, particularly addressing systemic inequity and injustice in the BC Motion Picture industry.
- Assists in working with other industry interest holders to further sustainability initiatives to improve the long-term sustainability, health, and well-being of the members of IATSE 891 and the motion picture industry at large.
- Assists with the collective bargaining process of the BCCFU Master Agreement.
- Assists with collective bargaining of independent agreements.
- Participates in maintaining statistical research for collective bargaining purposes.
- Responsible for developing knowledge of the Constitution, By-laws, practices, policies, and procedures of IATSE Local 891, as set out in the Local’s constitution.
- Responsible for developing knowledge of the operation of dispatch and member database and all relevant work issues in the industry affecting IATSE Local 891; and all other operational components of Local 891, including but not limited to Occupational Health and Safety, Health and Welfare, Membership, and Training.
- Assists with maintaining the Union’s brand message.
- Assists with communications and administration of IATSE 891 events.
- Other related duties as required and assigned.
bRequired experience:
- Knowledge and experience in the BC Motion Picture production community.
- Knowledge and understanding of REDI principles, reconciliation and decolonization, cultural safety, cultural humility, and anti-racism.
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a related creative industry, with preference given to those with business and labour relations experience.
- Government relations and lobbying experience preferred.
bQualifications:
- Successful completion of post-secondary education in a relevant field; including but not limited to business, communications, labour relations, and government relations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to navigate challenging situations with compassion, tact and discretion while maintaining healthy professional boundaries.
- Strong history of advocacy for workers’ rights.
- Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to understand contractual language.
- Demonstrated detailed knowledge of production budgeting.
- Exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to interact comfortably with an active membership of over 9,000 members as well as all internal and external interest holders.
- Working knowledge of various virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.
- Able to work quickly and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment.
- Superior organizational and time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines are all crucial.
- Capable of managing data and information with confidentiality and sensitivity.
- Proficient and detailed understanding of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Pro.
- Demonstrated practical communication skills, including exceptional verbal, written, and proofreading skills and public speaking.
- Must be able to learn and follow new directions quickly and without repetition, and demonstrate initiative, diplomacy, confidentiality and good judgment.
- Ability to follow privacy standards to maintain confidentiality.
- Understands the principles of good customer and member service.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and diplomacy skills are essential.
- Works well in a team environment as well as independently.
- Knowledge or experience with Union Committee structures or an organization with substantially similar structures.
- Conflict Resolution and de-escalation.
Testing/examinations may be administered to corroborate skills and qualifications.
This is a United Steel Workers bargaining unit position. Temporary Full Time (1 year).
