Arena Ice Plant Operator / Maintenance

JOB TYPE: Seasonal Fulltime
REPORTING TO: Director of Operations
SALARY: $29.80 to $36.54
VACATION: 8 Days

This position is structured to support a number of scheduled leaves of absence within the Village of Fraser Lake Public Works Department. The position will support critical service delivery to ensure no service disruptions. The Arena Ice Plant Operator/Maintenance position at the Fraser Lake Community Centre and C.H. Foote Memorial Arena requires specialized skills, training, and certification to ensure safe and efficient operations. The seasonal hours are from mid‑September to March 31st of every calendar year with an opportunity for the position to start earlier at the discretion of the Director of Operations.

Responsibilities include operating and maintaining the ice arena, curling rink, and related facilities; learning and applying ammonia ice plant safety procedures and regulatory requirements; performing maintenance tasks, regulatory checks, and accurate record‑keeping; and completing required training and provincial certification.

The role also involves installing, removing, and maintaining ice surfaces for hockey, figure skating, and public skating, as well as operating equipment such as the Olympia Ice Resurfacer and electric ice edger. Additional duties include responding to customer inquiries and ensuring a safe, welcoming environment. The position requires strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and a commitment to positive customer service. Supervision is provided by the Director of Operations or their designate, who may inspect work for compliance with standards.

Position, could lead to a permanent full‑time work in the summer upon a positive work performance and availability within the work plan.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Monitor and adjust refrigeration plant controls; report issues to the supervisor and the Chief Engineer.
  • Assist with event setup, takedown, and venue cleanliness.
  • Support maintenance and repair of wastewater and potable water systems.
  • Assist in maintaining and repairing Village streets, sidewalks, parks, playgrounds, and buildings.
  • Operate equipment like lawn mowers, backhoes, and garbage trucks as needed.
  • Ensure facility security and cleanliness; perform general maintenance tasks.
  • Conduct ice resurfacing and maintenance; operate and maintain ice resurfacing equipment.
  • Respond to emergencies and assist in medical situations.
  • Maintain records, update logbooks, and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Liaise with contractors and ensure secure facility access.
  • Summer maintenance duties including lawn mowing, weed whacking, and park maintenance.
  • Solid waste disposal including garbage truck operation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Class 5 driver's license.
  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Air Brake Endorsement.
  • Hold a valid WHMIS certificate.
  • Refrigeration Safety Awareness Certificate.
  • Refrigeration Operator Certificate.
  • Ability to inspect, analyze and troubleshoot the operations of water and distribution systems and facilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, understand and convey technical information, and perform job specific math calculations.
  • Heavy Equipment experience will be considered an asset as will heavy equipment/ gas mechanic experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Water Treatment Operator Level and Equipment Operation considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with the general public.
  • Good organization skills.
