The Anishinabemowin Language Instructor will provide Ojibwe language instruction at Lakeview School.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

The Anishinabemowin Language Instructor reports directly to the School Principal

POSITION SUMMARY

The Language Instructor will be responsible for effective instruction, training, and evaluation of the progress of students ability to speak, read, and write in Anishinabemowin. It is essential that instructor make cultural connections to traditions, story, song and land-based learning as language learning is strengthened by the instruction associated with this role within the school.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Develop lesson plans, assessments, evaluations and provide Language Instruction for all grades assigned
  • Create and provide long-range plans to guide the instruction delivery and submit them to Principal
  • Inspire and mentor students to develop pride in their ancestral language and motivate them to use language in communications within all aspects of their daily lives
  • Collaborate with other Language Instructors and Teachers in the development of Anishinabemowin language, resources and curriculum to inform classrooms of language learning outside of Language classroom specific.
  • Provide effective classroom management
  • Develop and maintain language progress reports and term report cards on students
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of all information related to the children, parents, and staff
  • Attend workshops, training sessions, and conferences as it pertains to the program;
  • Interact with staff and community in a positive and professional manner
  • Assist in other areas as needed from time to time as designated by Principal
  • Maintains and follows internal routines and procedures for child health and safety and school wellness
  • Comply with M’Chigeeng First Nation Personnel Policies and Procedures as well as Lakeview School Policies and Procedures
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
PREFERRED

Ontario College of Teacher’s Certification & QECO rating, Bachelor of Arts, Fluent Ojibwe Language Speaker, Native Language Certification , understanding of theories and methodologies for teaching Native Language and the ability to apply these to practice.

MINIMUM

Fluency in Ojibway Language, Anishinaabemowin Immersion Program Certificate, Native Classroom Assistant Certificate

OTHER
  • Knowledge and/or experience with the culture, history and customs of the Anishinabek Nation
  • Excellent rapport with young people in a mentoring role, positive interpersonal skills, and willingness to work collaboratively and in cooperation within a team environment
  • Knowledge in smart board, I-pad technology, and other technologies
  • First Aid Certificate and CPR would be an asset
  • CRC/VSS requirement must be thirty (30) days current and be original or certified copy

CRC/VSS must be current thirty (30) days, original or certified copy.
