Job description
Overview

The Caseworker provides supervision and support for clients of the Halifax Centre of Hope as required by The Salvation Army and funding contract policies and procedures. The Caseworker is part of the Case Management Team for the Anchorage Recovery Program and reports to the Anchorage Recovery Program Supervisor.

Key Accountabilities
  • Casework Accountabilities and Client Support: Provide case management services for residents of the Halifax Centre of Hope; work with residents to create effective plans to address issues; build and maintain a therapeutic milieu with workers and residents; assist residents with applications to addiction recovery programs and provide referrals to community resources; conduct intakes with clients of the Anchorage Recovery program; facilitate group counselling sessions in an ethical and professional manner; perform intake and discharge procedures for clients of the Anchorage Recovery Program; intervene in crisis situations and provide relapse prevention strategies to aftercare clients of the Anchorage Recovery Program; understand and implement the Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) and experience utilizing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Motivational Interviewing modalities.
  • Case Management: Monitor the environment and clients / residents to ensure safety and security; complete regular client / resident status checks and room searches; ensure all required documentation of searches / checks is completed; complete urinalysis with clients as required; assist the Anchorage Recovery Program Supervisor in developing and coordinating the delivery of designated programs; intervene in crisis situations, provide emotional support and advocacy; perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Communication And Reporting: Establish, compile, and maintain proper records and files; write progress and in-depth reports; maintain confidentiality and all relevant documentation; provide statistical data for program evaluation and funders; collaborate with the Anchorage Recovery Program and Halifax Centre of Hope staff.
  • Community Networking And Partnerships: Provide support and referrals; have broad knowledge of addictions treatments, homelessness, mental health, and community resources; attend and facilitate case conferences; liaise with other agencies and participate in community committees or activities as appropriate.
  • Other Duties: Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Salvation Army policies; participate in supervision and performance reviews.
  • Health & Safety: May be exposed to moderate risk; to include potential physical attacks, infectious diseases, chemicals, sharp objects, noise, and dealing with challenging individuals.
Education, Qualifications And Certifications
  • University degree in Psychology or Social Work (or a relevant field)
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain CCAC (Canadian Certified Addiction Counsellor) upon hire
  • Minimum 2 years of case management experience with individuals with substance use disorder
  • Current First Aid / CPR; Criminal Record Check (CRC); Non-violent crisis intervention training (NVCI)
Experience And Skills
  • Knowledge of issues facing persons experiencing housing crisis and homelessness
  • Experience with therapeutic modalities for substance use disorders; knowledge of mental health and addictions support systems
  • Able to work with diverse backgrounds; strong professional writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to de-escalate, coach, and provide constructive feedback; problem-solving and independent decision-making within program framework
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; ability to assess needs and risks and demonstrate cultural sensitivity
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development; willingness to undergo background checks including vulnerable sector screening
Compensation

The target hiring range is $19.67 to $24.59 with a maximum of $29.51 per hour. Placement within the range depends on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate qualifications. Reasonable accommodation is available upon request via Recruitment.Accommodations@salvationarmy.ca.
