Job summary

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories is seeking an Engineering/Technical student for the 2027 Winter Student Program focused on sustainability. You will contribute to climate risk assessments, decarbonization and infrastructure projects across CNL sites during an 8‑month term.

Applicants must be returning to full-time studies; hybrid work at Chalk River enables on-site and remote work as required by operations. Strong data analysis and MS Office skills are essential to success.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a university program in Engineering, Architecture, Sustainability or related disciplines.
  • Experience with sustainability and climate-related projects is an asset.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office; advanced Excel and PowerBI preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with climate risk and vulnerability assessments for buildings, infrastructure, and operations.
  • Support evaluation and documentation of reports and opportunities to improve resilience.
  • Help develop sustainability requirements, guidance documents, tools and evaluation criteria.
  • Review project documentation to identify environmental performance improvements.
  • Prepare reports, dashboards, presentations, briefing notes and benchmarking studies.
  • Research low-carbon technologies, electrification options, renewables and energy efficiency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your manager.

Are you passionate about creating a more sustainable future? Do you enjoy using data and research to solve complex environmental challenges? Would you like to gain hands‑on experience in climate action, decarbonization, and sustainable infrastructure projects? If you answered yes, then this may be the job for you! CNL is looking for an Engineering or Technical Student to contribute to initiatives that support climate mitigation and adaptation, site decarbonization, and sustainable infrastructure projects across CNL sites.

All students applying for student positions at CNL must be returning to full-time studies upon completion of their work term. Exceptions will be made for students who require a work term to graduate.

What you will be doing!
  • Assisting with climate risk and vulnerability assessments for buildings, infrastructure, and operations.
  • Supporting the evaluation and documentation of reports and opportunities to improve resilience to climate-related hazards for CNL’s built assets and infrastructure.
  • Assisting in developing sustainability requirements, guidance documents, tools, and evaluation criteria for project teams.
  • Reviewing project documentation and identifying opportunities to improve environmental performance and sustainability outcomes.
  • Preparing reports, dashboards, presentations, briefing notes, communications materials, and benchmarking studies.
  • Researching and assessing low-carbon technologies, electrification opportunities, renewable energy solutions, and energy efficiency initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
  • Education
    • Currently enrolled in a university program in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Systems or other applicable specialization), Architecture, Sustainability or a combination of disciplines that include engineering, architecture, sustainability and business administration.
  • Experience
    • Previous experience with academic projects, case competitions, campus or community activities, or other experience associated with sustainability and climate change is an asset.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including advanced Excel and PowerBI, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to collect, organize, evaluate, and interpret quantitative and qualitative data.
    • Ability to review technical engineering specifications and architectural documents.
    • Effective written, verbal, and presentation communication skills, including technical writing.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
Working Conditions:
  • Working schedule: Five (5) days per week, seven and a half (7.5) hours per day for a thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hour work week.
  • This position follows a hybrid work arrangement (Chalk River Location), with work performed both onsite and remotely based on operational requirements.
