Canadian Nuclear Laboratories is seeking a 2027 Winter Student Program - Fire Protection Specialist at the Chalk River site. You will work with seasoned fire protection professionals to assess code compliance, oversee site fire safety, and contribute to multidisciplinary projects.

The role emphasizes reviewing documentation, supporting inspections, and applying knowledge of fire protection systems. Eligibility for Reliability Status with SASC and 3–5 years of history in specified regions is

Qualifications

  • Actively enrolled in a diploma program in fire protection engineering technology or a Bachelor of Science or engineering discipline.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel required.
  • Knowledge of fire safety principles, fire dynamics, and active/passive fire protection systems would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assess compliance with building and fire codes.
  • Provide oversight of site fire safety including active and passive systems.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to other groups seeking fire protection support.
  • Write/review fire safety documentation, plans and specifications for compliance.
  • Conduct project inspections and walkdowns.
  • Participate on multi-disciplinary teams related to construction and renovation and advise on fire protection impact.

Our Chalk River location is looking for a 2027 Winter Student Program- Fire Protection Specialist to work alongside experienced fire protection professionals, contributing to code compliance assessments, fire safety system oversight, inspections, documentation reviews, and multidisciplinary projects.

Field of Study:Fire Protection or Fire Safety Engineering
Year of study: 1st Year or higher

What you will be doing!
  • Assessing compliance with building and fire codes.
  • Providing oversight of site fire safety, including active and passive fire safety systems.
  • Providing subject matter expertise to other groups seeking support from fire protection.
  • Writing and reviewing fire safety documentation, plans, and specifications for compliance.
  • Conducting project inspections and walkdowns.
  • Participating on multi-disciplinary teams related to construction and renovation and providing input on how the work affects fire protection.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
  • Education
    • Actively enrolled in a diploma program in fire protection engineering technology or a Bachelor of Science or engineering discipline.
  • Experience
    • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel required.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Knowledge of principles of fire safety, fire dynamics, active/passive fire protection systems, etc.
    • Understanding of relevant codes and standards considered an asset.
    • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security".
Working Conditions:
  • Working schedule: Five (5) days per week, seven and a half (7.5) hours per day for a thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hour work week.
