One full-time, tenure-track teaching faculty position in Modern Languages is available, beginning with the Fall 2025 semester. The primary responsibility will be to teach first and second semester language courses, with the possibility of an upper-level literature or history course. A specialty in one of the four credit languages taught at NCC — Spanish, French, Arabic or Chinese — is desired. A candidate who is fluent and possesses graduate course work in two of these languages is preferred.

The teaching load is 15 credits/semester; 30 credits/academic year. In addition to teaching, all faculty members must advise students, engage in substantive college service activities, and pursue professional growth activity every year.

A Master’s degree in the language is required; a degree in both languages is preferred. The ideal candidate will possess near-native fluency in both languages. The ideal candidate will also have three years of college teaching experience (preferably in a community college); the ability to meet the needs of community college students; experience working with students from culturally diverse backgrounds; and current knowledge of academic assessment practices. Willingness to collaborate with colleagues is also important.

Responsibilities

The standard preparations for this position include teaching the first and second semester of a language; in other words, helping students attain fluency and correctness in basic conversational and written grammatical structures.

Other responsibilities may include developing non-credit courses that teach language for special purposes (police, fire, health); helping students evaluate commercial apps and AI for developing language fluency; and helping colleagues teach the culture and geographical areas of the places in which the candidate’s primary language is spoken.

In addition to teaching, all faculty members must engage in substantive college service and professional growth activity every year and advise students. The successful candidate will be ready to use multiple instructional techniques and able to integrate technology, including the thoughtful handling of AI and of multi-modal assignments.

Additionally, the successful candidate will:

  • Display facility with learner-centered pedagogical practices.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of academic assessment practices.
  • Welcome opportunities to work with undergraduate students not intending to major in English.
  • Engage students in process writing, in part by using instructional technology in English courses.
  • Model excellence for our students.
  • Advise students in the General Studies and Liberal Arts degree programs.

All candidates for this position will be asked to do a teaching demonstration for the search committee.
