Role
Delivery of legal advice to projects and legal training to business. Delivers the business strategy for the team/function and supports plans for the function, providing advice and solutions to support business.
Responsibilities
- Inputs and delivers to elements of the legal function strategic plan and provision of legal advice and support.
- Identifies and implements continuous improvement plans and identifies key business improvements and processes.
- Carries out and supports the review of tender contracts and legal agreements for business projects.
- Responsible for the delivery of training programmes to the business on legal and contractual risks and issues.
- Provides guidance and directions to junior members of the legal team and delegates responsibilities such as when required to appropriate team resources.
- Provides comprehensive advice on issues arising, risks and commercial queries.
- Develops and maintains a series of both internal and external relationships.
- Provides mentoring/training to members of the team.
- Shares technical/functional/domain expertise to upskill capabilities of team members to support development of individuals and service provision.
- Works collaboratively towards the common goal of net zero carbon transition and share responsibility for the proactive identification and management of the associated carbon emissions and reductions during the delivery of work.
Qualifications
- A relevant degree qualification.
- Working knowledge and expertise in complex legal matters.
- Utilises experience and expertise to recommend solutions to legal issues to senior stakeholders.
- Ability to understand complex legal information and concepts and able to articulate to others including a range of stakeholders.
- Champions a data led approach to risk.
Technical Competencies
- Conversant with industry forms of contract e.g. New Engineering Contract (NEC), Joint Contracts Tribunal (JCT), International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC).
- Good working knowledge of construction project insurances and management of claims.
- Familiarity with regulatory environment e.g. around health and safety, building safety act, public procurement etc.
Industry Competencies
- Qualified construction lawyer in England and Wales, or a relevant jurisdiction. (or local equivalent).
- Experience in more than one jurisdiction where the relevant Engine/BU conducts business.
- Experience with contentious construction matters, disputes and claims avoidance.
Professional Competencies
- Communicates complex ideas/technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
- Manages, influences and negotiates with key senior stakeholders (up to Project Director).
- Assist with managing and delivering change.
- Astute commercial awareness, understanding how the construction and built environment industries work, revenues and margins, risks, etc.
- Horizon scanning, anticipates and shows appreciation of how new legislation comes into force, and current legal trends providing legal expertise for portfolio.
Leadership Competencies
- Excellent negotiation skills.
- Guides, coaches, upskills and develops team members including junior/support roles.
- Is adept at managing multiple priorities and stakeholders and solves complex problems utilising legal expertise.
- Represent the legal team with internal stakeholders utilising comprehensive legal expertise.
