Wood is recruiting a Senior Energy Storage Consultant to join our Renewables business in Abu Dhabi, supporting renewable energy, energy storage, and hybrid power projects across the Middle East.

Our Clean Energy Centre of Excellence operates globally, and we are expanding our presence in the UAE to support the region’s ambitious energy transition goals. This role will be based in Abu Dhabi, with opportunities for regional travel and collaboration with global teams.

  • Have 5-7 years of previous work experience in the BESS industry in a consultancy, developer, investor or utility

Typical responsibilities
  • Leading BESS projects, providing engineering inputs from initial assessment, through to technical and economic feasibility, development phase, technical due diligence, design optimisation, financing, construction monitoring, acceptance and operation monitoring
  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for clients, ensuring solutions meet project‑specific constraints and regional standards
  • Prepare technical documentation: specifications, reports, proposals, and Employer’s Requirements, fire and explosion risk assessments, and pre‑fire plans
  • Providing procurement and contract negotiation technical support, preparing tender documentation, and supporting the tender evaluation process
  • Providing technical support to other teams and clients regarding BESS industry best practices and technology
  • Technical assessment of BESS, including all relevant system components
  • Work with our solar PV, wind, green hydrogen and other technical teams to deliver energy storage and hybrid power projects
  • Conduct site visits across the Middle East and internationally
  • Manage project budgets, timelines, and deliverables while maintaining client relationships

Expected
  • MSc or Ph.D in Renewable Energy or a related field
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrochemistry, or related field
  • Expertise delivering technical due diligence and owner’s engineering assignments for utility‑scale BESS across the asset lifecycle
  • Technical Expertise: Proven experience delivering technical due diligence and owner’s engineering assignments for utility‑scale BESS across the asset lifecycle
  • Advisory Background: Strong consulting experience providing technical services to developers, lenders, investors, asset owners, route‑to‑market providers, and vendors
  • Design Review Skills: Expertise in reviewing integrated BESS designs and assessing battery technology, power conversion systems, thermal management, battery management systems, energy management, fire prevention and suppression systems, metering requirements, and SCADA system designs
  • Market Knowledge: Understanding of revenue streams available to BESS in international markets (Middle East, GCC, and global), with solid grasp of technical requirements and design implications to enable their provision
  • Industry Awareness: Actively tracking market developments, best practices, and technology advancements in the energy storage sector, with a commercial mindset to complement technical support
  • Risk Assessment: Experience performing or reviewing fire and explosion risk assessments
  • Regulatory Familiarity: Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations relevant to the Middle East and international markets (GCC, IEC, IEEE)
  • Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills
  • Flexible and proactive approach to project delivery
  • Right to work in the UAE (visa sponsorship available for international candidates)
  • Previous project management experience
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills in English
Desirable
  • Experience working in a technical consultancy
  • 5 – 7 years of experience in Lithium BESS design, integration and development.
  • Academic background in BESS technology
  • Competence in reviewing and providing expert commentary regarding BESS contracts, warranties and performance guarantees
  • Familiarity with BESS technical inputs to financial models
  • Hands‑on experience in development, construction, commissioning, and/or operation of BESS projects (stand‑alone or integrated with renewable energy solutions, behind or in front of the meter)
  • Experience with BESS test inspection, witnessing and verification of commissioning
  • Familiarity with BESS technical modelling and forecasting (e.g., usable energy output, cycling, performance analysis, degradation analysis and forecasting, revenue streams stacking, techno‑economic optimisation, among others)
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills in English
  • Ability to speak Arabic or another language in addition to English
  • Valid UAE driving licence or willingness to obtain one
