Accounting Manager (Reporting to CFO)
100% Remote | Full-Time

San Francisco Film School is hiring an Accounting Manager to own the day-to‑day execution of our accounting operations. This is a hands‑on role for an experienced operator who knows accounting deeply, has owned payroll and core HR‑related workflows, can work through ambiguity and does not require close supervision to deliver accurate, reliable work.

Success in this role requires judgment, follow‑through and accountability across recurring deadlines and transactional workflows – not just task completion. This role reports directly to the CFO and is foundational to keeping the school’s financial records clean and dependable.
This is not a strategy, budgeting or compliance‑judgment role. It is an execution‑focused role for someone who takes pride in well‑run accounting operations.

1. Own Day‑to‑Day Accounting Operations
   • Maintain the general ledger in QuickBooks Online
   • Record journal entries and accruals with appropriate support
   • Perform bank and credit card reconciliations
   • Investigate and resolve discrepancies
   • Maintain clean, organized, audit‑ready books throughout the year
2. Manage Billing, Payroll, and Transactional Workflows
   • Handle billing and invoicing through the accounting system
   • Process payroll and manage payroll‑related HR workflows, including new‑hire setup, terminations and ongoing employee changes
   • Own go‑forward Populi billing operations after initial implementation
   • Record and allocate federal funds (e.g., Title IV, VA‑related funds) at the student level, ensuring accurate posting and reconciliation
   • Collect, maintain and safeguard banking and payment information for students and employees related to stipends, reimbursements and payroll
   • Process student stipend and reimbursement payments and record them in QuickBooks Online
   • Reconcile student‑level activity across Populi, payment systems, and the general ledger
3. Support Close, Year‑End Readiness and Projects
   • Support month‑end close as needed (flexible cadence)
   • Ensure accruals, reconciliations and documentation are complete for year‑end
   • Assist with auditor requests as routed through the CFO
   • Partner with the CFO on ad hoc reconciliations, analyses and accounting projects

• Reports directly to the CFO
• Individual contributor role; no people management
• Expected to follow established internal controls when handling student funds, banking information, and payment workflows
• HR policy, employee relations and benefits design remain outside the scope of this role
• CFO retains responsibility for cash management, budgeting and forecasting, compliance judgment and accounting policy decisions

This role is not a training position and is not well‑suited for candidates whose prior experience was limited to a narrowly defined accounting function within a highly segmented organization.

• 5–8+ years of hands‑on accounting experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field preferred
• Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Excel
• Familiarity with payroll systems and basic employee lifecycle processes (onboarding, changes, terminations)
• Experience working in small or mid‑sized organizations where accounting responsibilities were not highly siloed
• Has owned multiple parts of the accounting lifecycle simultaneously (billing, payroll, reconciliations, close)
• Comfortable prioritizing across competing deadlines rather than executing a single narrow function
• Strong command of core accounting mechanics (GL, accruals, reconciliations)
• Able to independently identify issues, research root causes and resolve discrepancies
• Experience handling sensitive financial data and executing repeatable payment workflows with accuracy and discretion
• Higher‑education experience a plus; CPA not required

QuickBooks Online, Populi (SIS), payroll systems, Excel, banking and payment platforms (e.g., Stripe)

• Fully remote – expected to maintain regular availability overlapping U.S. PST business hours
• Salary range: $95,000–$115,000, depending on experience
• Range reflects an execution‑focused individual contributor role without people management, audit ownership, or compliance authority
