The primary role of the Educators is to support the learning needs of staff and patients by providing opportunities for the acquisition of new knowledge, skills and behaviors in view of advancing technologies, changing health care delivery systems, expanding staff roles, evidence base practice and research. These opportunities include but are not limited to orientation, continuing education, formal and informal inservices, coaching and consulting. Furthermore, the education department believes that South Texas Health System employee’s continuing education is a major asset in employee recruitment and retention.

• Must demonstrate commitment and adherence to STHS’s Compliance Program and Code of Conduct through compliance with all policies and procedures, the Code of Conduct, attendance at required training and immediately reporting suspected compliance issue(s) to the Compliance Officer.
• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and current licensure by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing with 2 to 3 years experience or Master’s preferred.
• If not currently a BSN nurse must be enrolled in a BSN program and obtain the degree within 24 months of hire; if doing a Bridge program to MSN obtain within 24 months.
• Must have and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS). If not already certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) must obtain within 6 months of hire. Must acquire Instructor Trainer Certifications for BLS, ACLS and PALS within 2 years of employment, following the AHA curriculum for Healthcare Providers. For Behavioral Health, the educator only requires a BLS instructor certification within 24 months.
• Clinical Practice Institute (CPI) within 24 months for Behavioral Health only.
• Current Basic Life Support / CPR upon hire and thereafter.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS): if required in unit for nurse with a year or less of experience – obtain within 12 months of hire; if with over a year of experience – obtain within 6 months of hire; or if hired with a current certification must keep current at all times.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) / Enriched Nursing Practice Certificate (ENPC): same requirements as ACLS.
• BLS Instructor (BLSI): Obtain within 24 months of hire.
• ACLS Instructor (ACLSI): Obtain within 24 months of hire.
• PALS Instructor (PALSI): Obtain within 24 months of hire.
