Job summary

South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) seeks a Lieutenant to support facility operations, safety, and rehabilitation for youth. Under supervision of the Captain, you will lead security staff, coordinate shifts, and ensure policy compliance across shifts, while maintaining positive youth development in a secure environment.

Applicants should have a high school diploma with supervisory experience in correctional or security settings; a bachelor’s degree may substitute.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and supervisory experience in correctional/security.
• Bachelor's degree may substitute for supervisory experience.
• Knowledge of state law and DJJ facility operations.
• Ability to supervise staff and manage youth safely.

Responsibilities

• Engages with youth to ensure safety, security, rehabilitation and wellbeing.
• Maintains frequent and helpful communication with youth throughout the day.
• Responds physically to emergencies and enforces safety procedures.
• Conducts routine and unannounced security inspections per policy.
• Supervises, mentors and evaluates security staff on duty.
• Maintains shift schedules and completes required reports.
