South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice seeks a Lieutenant to support facility operations and safety for youth and staff. Under Captain supervision, you will contribute to strategic planning, oversee security teams, and ensure adherence to agency policies and state law.

The role emphasizes positive youth development, staff mentorship, and maintaining a secure environment. Training includes behavioral management and emergency response in a high‑demand setting.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; supervisory experience in correctional/security/police preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in human services or criminal justice may substitute for supervisory experience.
• Knowledge of state law, facility rules, and youth control procedures is essential.
• Ability to exercise good judgment, build relationships with youth, and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

• Engages with youth to ensure safety, security, rehabilitation and well-being.
• Maintains communication with youth throughout the day.
• Conducts routine security inspections and frisk searches.
• Supervises and mentors security staff to ensure safety and security of staff, youth and property.
• Maintains inventory of security equipment and coordinates shift coverage.
• Completes required incident reports and ensures policy compliance.
