Job summary

South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) is seeking a Captain to lead security staff across a juvenile justice facility. You will direct shifts, ensure safety, manage Lieutenants, Sergeants and JCOs, and coordinate with leadership to support positive youth development and a secure rehabilitative environment.

Qualifications

• Minimum high school diploma with supervisory experience.
• May substitute a bachelor’s degree in human services or criminal justice for required supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

• Engages with youth daily to ensure safety, security, rehabilitation and well‑being.
• Maintains frequent and helpful communication with youth.
• Responds physically to emergencies and mediates conflicts.
• Conducts routine security inspections and frisk searches as per policy.
• Ensures staff are trained and properly supervised, and that scheduling meets facility needs.
• Oversees staff performance, disciplinary actions, and annual EPMS planning.
