Job summary

YMCA of San Diego County is seeking a Youth Development Teacher to work with children aged 5–12 in a community care setting. You will plan and implement activities, supervise participants, and promote a safe, supportive environment within the YMCA program at partner sites.

The role emphasizes collaboration with school staff, delivering engaging activities, and guiding youth behavior. Availability Mon–Thu 2:45–6pm and Fri 12–6pm is required, with at least 3 days/week commitment.

Qualifications

• Must be 18+ and a high school graduate.
• Completion of 12 units in Child Development or related field.
• Completion of 6 additional units while enrolled will be considered.
• Minimum of 6 months of related experience preferred.
• Basic English communication skills; additional languages desirable.
• Criminal background clearance per YMCA and licensing guidelines.
• TB test current; immunizations (MMR, TDap, influenza) required within specified timelines.
• Pediatric CPR and First Aid certification required within 30 days (ARC/AAH/ISA).

Responsibilities

• Implement age-appropriate program activities for ages 5–12.
• Actively supervise participants to ensure safety.
• Communicate professionally with participants, families, schools, and partners.
• Collaborate with school personnel to align academic activities.
• Provide positive behavior guidance supporting development.
• Maintain a safe, organized, and clean space.
• Follow emergency procedures to protect participants and staff.
• Provide leadership to YMCA Youth Development Aide.
• Be dependable and flexible with daily schedule changes.
• Lead sports, games, and curriculum activities.
