Job summary

YMCA of San Diego County seeks a Youth Development Teacher to guide 5-12 year-olds in a before/after-school program. You’ll lead activities, supervise youth, and collaborate with schools to provide quality academic and recreational experiences in a safe, supportive YMCA setting.

You will ensure compliance with licensing and safety protocols, coordinate with staff, and help develop positive behaviors while keeping facilities organized and welcoming for children and families.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age or older and a high school graduate.
• Completion, with passing grades, of 12 units in Child Development (CD) or related field.
• Completion, with passing grades, of 6 units with 6 more units of current enrollment in Child Development or related field will be considered.
• Minimum of 6 months working in a child and youth development, education, or comparable setting preferred
• Basic computer skills and ability to speak, read, and write the English language.
• Criminal record clearance per YMCA and licensing guidelines.
• Pass a physical exam and provide TB test results within 7 days of hire, current within 1 year.
• Measles, pertussis, and influenza immunizations within 7 days of hire; TB test current within 1 year.
• Pediatric CPR and Pediatric First Aid certification within 30 days of hire from recognized providers.

Responsibilities

• Implement age-appropriate program activities engaging students in active, meaningful experiences per YMCA goals.
• Actively supervise participants ensuring guidance and safety at all times.
• Communicate professionally with participants, families, schools, and partners.
• Collaborate with school personnel to align high-quality academic activities and coordinate services.
• Provide positive behavior guidance supporting developmental and social-emotional needs.
• Ensure program meets YMCA San Diego County requirements.
• Maintain space to be clean, organized, and safe.
• Follow emergency procedures to ensure safety of participants and staff.
• Provide leadership to assigned YMCA Youth Development Aide.
• Be dependable and adaptable to daily schedule changes.
• Support sports, games, and curriculum activities and monitor youth behavior.
