Job summary

City of Austin is seeking a seasoned supervisor to lead construction and drainage maintenance crews, operating heavy equipment and coordinating multi‑crews on stormwater projects.

The role emphasizes safety, adherence to engineering drawings, and timely material management, with responsibilities including daily task assignment, equipment maintenance, and on‑site leadership during emergencies.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent and five (5) years of experience related to construction or drainage maintenance, including three (3) years of heavy equipment operation experience.
• One (1) year of additional related experience may substitute for one (1) year of high school up to a maximum of four (4) years substitution.
• Valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Specific endorsements may be required to be obtained within 120 days of hire. Must maintain a good driving record.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and follow written and oral instructions; complete electronic forms and reports.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret engineering drawings and work plans, assigning job duties and monitoring task completion and quality of work; train and lead large crews.
• Ensure sufficient materials, proper tools and equipment are delivered to the jobsite in a timely manner; coordinate crew work with other city employees.
• Oversee safety, perform pre-trip inspections of equipment, and manage vehicle operations and maintenance.
• Supervise traffic control and landscape maintenance tasks; lead vegetation management in creek and channel assets.
• Participate in on‑job and skill‑based training to meet department goals and be prepared for emergencies.
