Responsibilities

While this position provides virtual patient companion services to the patients of CommonSpirit Health across the United States, it must be worked on-site at our Phoenix AZ Virtual Hospital located at 3033 N. 3rd Avenue.

Virtual Patient Companion

Working as a Patient Companion is a rewarding career that allows you to help people in need across the United States in a 24/7 virtual call center environment. As part of our highly specialized team at CommonSpirit Health's Virtual Hospital in Phoenix, AZ, this position involves monitoring patients identified as high risk for falls, elopement, illicit drug/alcohol use, disorientation/dementia, pulling out lines/tubes, and other safety concerns that could affect their healing at 140+ hospitals across 21 states. Patient Companions are compassionate individuals comfortable talking to people who might be emotional, panicked, stressed, or in pain. They work virtually, responding calmly and efficiently to ensure the best patient outcomes.

What you'll do:

• Utilize live streaming video and two-way communication devices to monitor assigned patients nationwide, acting as the eyes and ears for onsite care teams.
• Recognize behavioral changes, evaluate situations quickly, and communicate with patients or report urgent issues to ensure safety and comfort.
• Practice active listening and observation to anticipate behavioral changes and engage onsite staff appropriately.
• Serve as a communication link for patients, providing reassurance and escalation when necessary.

Work Requirements:

• Recognize signs of agitation, impulsiveness, line/tube pulling, and substance use.
• Follow protocols to notify staff of safety concerns and maintain effective communication.
• Report behavioral changes and escalate as needed using established procedures.
• Learn procedures, equipment, and terminology relevant to the work unit.

Key Responsibilities:

• Maintain continuous surveillance of assigned patients and initiate communication as appropriate.
• Communicate professionally with bedside staff and report issues promptly.
• Identify and report behavioral or condition changes per guidelines.
• Document observations, actions, and system malfunctions accurately and timely.

Qualifications

Required: High School diploma or equivalent plus 3 years recent patient care experience or official transcript showing completion of nursing fundamentals and clinical practice.

Preferred: Current certification or enrollment in healthcare programs like nursing, medical assisting, EMT, etc.

Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge:

• Ability to learn and operate streaming video and hospital systems.
• Maintain constant patient observation and follow protocols.
• Document observations accurately and establish effective relationships.
• Troubleshoot basic technical issues and perform basic math.
• Understand and adhere to safety and confidentiality procedures.
• Communicate effectively in English and use office systems proficiently.
