Responsibilities

While this position provides virtual patient companion services to the patients of CommonSpirit Health across the United States, this position must work on-site at our Phoenix AZ Virtual Hospital located at 3033 N. 3rd Avenue.

Virtual Patient Companion

Working as a Patient Companion is a rewarding career that allows you to help people in need across the United States in a 24/7 virtual call center environment. As part of our highly specialized team of patient caregivers at CommonSpirit Health's Virtual Hospital in Phoenix, AZ, this position will continually monitor patients identified as high risk for falls, elopement, illicit drug/alcohol use, disorientation/dementia, pulling out lines/tubes, and other safety concerns that could jeopardize their recovery at over 140 hospitals across 21 states. Patient Companions are compassionate individuals comfortable communicating with emotionally distressed or in-pain patients. The ideal candidate remains calm under stress, providing virtual support to ensure patient safety and comfort. Are you that person?

What You'll Do

• Use live streaming video and two-way communication devices to monitor patients across the country, acting as the eyes and ears for onsite care teams.
• Recognize behavioral changes, evaluate situations, and communicate or escalate as necessary to maintain patient safety.
• Practice active listening and observation to anticipate changes, asking critical questions to inform onsite staff.
• Serve as a lifeline or escalation point for patients, providing reassurance and support remotely.

Work Requirements

• Ability to recognize signs of patient agitation, impulsiveness, line/tube pulling, or substance use.
• Follow protocols for notifying staff of safety concerns and maintain effective communication.
• Report behavioral changes and escalate issues using established protocols.
• Learn procedures, equipment, and terminology relevant to the work unit.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain continuous surveillance of assigned patients and initiate communication as appropriate.
• Communicate promptly and professionally with bedside staff.
• Report camera issues and observe for behavioral or condition changes, documenting actions taken.

Qualifications

Required: High School diploma or equivalent with 3 years recent patient care experience or completion of fundamentals of nursing and clinical practice in RN school.

Preferred: Medical certification/license (Nursing Assistant, EMT, etc.) or enrollment in a healthcare program.

Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

• Ability to learn and operate streaming video and hospital software systems.
• Maintain constant observation, follow protocols, document accurately, and troubleshoot technical issues.
• Establish effective relationships, understand and follow safety procedures, and communicate clearly in English.
• Complete competency training as a Virtual Companion.
