Responsibilities

While this position provides virtual patient companion services to the patients of CommonSpirit Health across the United States, it must be performed on-site at our Phoenix AZ Virtual Hospital located at 3033 N. 3rd Avenue.

Virtual Patient Companion

Working as a Patient Companion is a rewarding career that helps people in need across the U.S. in a 24/7 virtual call center environment. As part of our specialized team at CommonSpirit Health's Virtual Hospital in Phoenix, AZ, this role involves monitoring high-risk patients (e.g., fall risk, elopement, substance use, disorientation, pulling lines/tubes) across 140+ hospitals in 21 states. Patient Companions are compassionate, comfortable talking to emotionally distressed or in-pain individuals, working virtually to ensure safety and comfort under stress.

What you'll do:
  • Use live streaming video and two-way communication tools to monitor patients, acting as the eyes and ears for onsite care teams.
  • Recognize behavioral changes, evaluate situations, and communicate or report urgent concerns promptly.
  • Practice active observation and listening to anticipate behavioral changes and engage onsite staff effectively.
  • Provide reassurance and support to patients, serving as a lifeline or escalation point as needed.

Work Requirements:
  • Recognize signs of agitation, impulsiveness, substance use, and other safety concerns.
  • Follow protocols to notify staff and communicate effectively with team members.
  • Report behavioral changes and escalate as necessary.
  • Learn procedures, equipment, and terminology relevant to the role.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Monitor patients continuously via video, ensuring appropriate interaction and safety.
  • Communicate with bedside staff professionally and promptly.
  • Report technical issues or obstructions.
  • Identify behavioral or condition changes per guidelines.
  • Document observations, actions, and reports accurately.
Qualifications

Required: High school diploma and 3 years recent patient care experience or completion of nursing fundamentals and clinical practice.

Preferred: Current medical certification/license (Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, EMT) or enrollment in a healthcare program.

Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge:
  • Ability to learn and operate streaming video and hospital systems.
  • Maintain constant observation and follow protocols.
  • Document accurately and establish effective relationships.
  • Troubleshoot basic technical issues and perform basic math.
  • Adhere to safety, privacy, and communication standards.
