American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a PACU position in a critical access hospital requiring prior Phase 1 recovery experience and compact or ID RN licensure. The role involves working in a 14-bed Perioperative Care unit across pre-op, PACU, pre-Endo, and post-Endo areas with a mix of cases including ortho and general surgery.

Shifts are 8– or 10-hour with start times between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m.; on-call and weekend rotations apply.

Qualifications

• Active RN license (ID or compact) required.
• BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification required.
• 2 years of PACU experience preferred; 1 year PACU with inpatient background will be considered.
• Must have Phase 1 recovery experience and solid surgical recovery skills.
• Limited endoscopy or C-section experience acceptable.
• Driver's license required for consideration.
• Two professional references: one supervisor within 12 months and one peer within 3 years.

Responsibilities

• Work in a 14-bed Perioperative Care unit with 3 PACU bays and 11 interchangeable bays.
• Assigned across pre-op, PACU (Phase 1/2), pre-Endo, and post-Endo areas.
• Cases include ortho, general surgery, GYN, C-sections, endoscopy, plastics, neuro/spinal as needed.
• Care for older pediatric patients for ortho trauma and some pediatric dental cases.
• RNs read cardiac strips and follow ASPAN guidelines for nurse-to-patient ratios.
• Shifts are 8– or 10-hour; may have 12-hour shifts; start times 6–8am; on-call and weekend rotations apply.
• Floating across pre-op, PACU, pre-Endo, and post-Endo is expected; unit staffed by charge nurses and ANM.

• 2 years of PACU experience preferred; candidates with 1 year PACU experience and extensive inpatient nursing background will be considered
• Must have Phase 1 recovery experience and solid general surgical recovery skills
• Limited endoscopy or C-section experience is acceptable
• Driver's license required for consideration
• Two professional references required: one supervisor reference from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor reference from within the last 3 years worked, both including employment dates and rehire eligibility

Responsibilities

• Work in a 14-bed Perioperative Care unit with 3 PACU bays and 11 interchangeable bays for pre-op, same day discharge, and Endo
• Assigned across pre-op, PACU (Phase 1 and Phase 2), pre-Endo, and post-Endo areas
• Common cases include ortho total joints (IP and OP), sports medicine, ortho trauma, general surgery, GYN, C-sections, endoscopy, with occasional plastics and neuro/spinal cases
• Treats older pediatric patients for ortho trauma and some younger pediatric dental cases
• Nurse-to-patient ratios follow ASPAN guidelines
• Uses Epic EMR
• 8 and 10 hour shifts available, with start times between 6-8am; 12 hour shifts rarely used
• No self-scheduling offered
• RNs are responsible for reading cardiac strips
• Weeknight call scheduled 6pm-7am, typically 5-6 shifts per month
• Weekend call runs 24 hours Friday 6pm through Monday 7am, assigned on a rotation basis
• On-call response time is 30 minutes; must remain within 30 minutes of the hospital while on call
• May be assigned holiday call if a holiday falls during the contract
• Floating across pre-op, PACU (Phase 1/2), pre-Endo, and post-Endo is an expected part of the role, not considered floating
• Unit staffed with charge nurses and an ANM scheduled Monday-Friday; charge nurse typically covers lunches and assists with efficiency rather than carrying an assignment
• 2 CNAs on staff Monday-Friday to assist with HUC duties, room turnovers, and other tasks; all RNs are expected to help clean and turnover rooms
• Respiratory therapy available as needed
• No ICU on-site; patients requiring a higher level of care remain in OR/PACU with anesthesia provider until transport arrives
• Scrubs are provided
• Unit-specific orientation includes a preceptor pairing for 3-5 shifts, covering unit norms and system values
• First-time travelers are welcome to apply
• Permanent employees must wait one year after leaving before applying for a travel assignment
• Must reside outside a 50-mile radius of the facility to be eligible for this position
• No blocked scheduling or special scheduling requests accepted
