Job summary

American Traveler is seeking an experienced PACU RN for a 13-week acute care contract in North Dakota. Pediatric recovery experience and ND or compact RN licensure are required, with BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.

Work in a Level 2 Trauma Center PACU (15 beds), covering Phase 1 and Phase 2 recovery. Nurse-to-patient ratio 1:2 (1:1 for pediatric), with 8- or 10-hour shifts, on-call duties, and weekend coverage. EPIC EMR experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Active ND or compact RN license required.
• Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications required.
• Minimum 3 years PACU experience preferred.
• Must be able to recover pediatric patients.
• Must be willing to second-phase patients out of the OR.
• Experience reading telemetry strips required.
• EPIC EMR experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Acute care PACU in a Level 2 Trauma Center with 15 beds.
• Covers both Phase 1 and Phase 2 recovery.
• Nurse-to-patient ratio 1:2 (1:1 for pediatric or higher acuity).
• Care for mixed adult and pediatric surgical patients.
• Handles all OR cases except transplant.
• Must recover vented patients on pressors or with blood products.
• Uses EPIC EMR.
• Mixed 8- and 10-hour day shifts with varying starts.
• On-call 1–2 nights per 6 weeks; up to 8 shifts total.
• 24 hours of weekend call per 6 weeks.
• Holiday call as needed; 30-minute call response time.
• Travelers float to inpatient units as needed.
• Charge nurse may occasionally take an assignment.
• Unit orientation includes 2 days in PACU plus buddy call.
• First-time travelers may be considered.

Requirements

• Active ND or compact RN license required
• Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications required
• Minimum 3 years of PACU experience preferred
• Must be able to recover pediatric patients
• Must be willing to second-phase patients out of the OR
• Experience reading telemetry strips required
• Experience with ventilated patients on pressors or receiving blood products preferred
• EPIC EMR experience preferred
• Copy of driver's license required for consideration
• Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, including employment dates and rehire eligibility

• Covers both Phase 1 and Phase 2 recovery
• Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2, or 1:1 for pediatric or higher acuity patients
• Mixed patient population including daily pediatric cases and patients with disabilities requiring sensitive care
• Handles all OR cases except transplant
• Must recover vented patients on pressors or requiring blood products
• Uses EPIC EMR
• Mixed 8 and 10-hour day shifts with varying start times
• On-call requirement of 1-2 nights per 6-week schedule, up to 8 shifts total
• 24 hours of weekend call required per 6-week schedule
• Holiday call as needed during contract
• Call response time of 30 minutes
• Travelers float first, typically to inpatient units as helping hands, sitters, or for Phase 2 comfort care
• Charge nurse present each shift and occasionally takes an assignment; travelers not utilized in charge role
• Nurse aide support sometimes available in the department
• Provide post-anesthesia recovery care for a mixed adult and pediatric surgical population
• Scrubs provided by the facility
• Unit-specific orientation includes 2 days in PACU plus a buddy call during the first weekend
• Success in this role favors kindness, efficiency, teamwork, and a willingness to help others
• Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility
• Candidates may not have been employed full time, part time, or PRN with any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity, within the past year
• Up to 7 days of RTO may be requested upfront for the 13-week contract; additional RTO will not be approved
• First-time travelers may be considered for this position
