Job summary

Making Opportunity Count is seeking Residential Counselors to support families in a congregate emergency shelter in Boston. You will provide hands-on coaching, conduct intakes, orient new residents, and enforce shelter policies while maintaining safety and structure in a 24/7 facility.

You will perform light housekeeping, document shifts and incidents, and offer crisis support as needed. The role requires compassion, trauma-informed care, and strong English communication to ensure residents feel

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • 3 years of experience in social services preferred.
  • Ability to follow shelter safety guidelines and handle emergencies.
  • Strong communication in English, both written and spoken.
  • Excellent customer service, organizational, interpersonal, and written skills.
  • Basic computer skills for data collection are required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide case management support to families in coordination with the site team.
  • Communicate and enforce shelter rules and regulations.
  • Respond to emergencies, document promptly and follow guidelines.
  • Conduct intake and support transfers or terminations of EA families.
  • Provide assistance and structure, addressing guest/resident concerns.
  • Initiate crisis intervention when needed.
  • Maintain documentation per program guidelines (logs, reports, compliance).
  • Attend meetings and trainings as requested.
  • Monitor security cameras and perform building rounds.
  • Perform light housekeeping duties to support site cleanliness.
  • Follow scheduling and staffing procedures.
  • Report health and safety concerns to staff.
  • Maintain privacy of resident information.
