Job description

George Fox University's Institutional Technology (IT) Department is seeking an energetic, service-minded individual to fill the role of Temporary Computer Support Technician.

About the Job:

Combining technical aptitude with a heart for service, this position provides hands‑on technical support, hardware deployment, and software troubleshooting for faculty, staff, and students across campus.

In addition to traditional hardware and software support, this role assists end‑users with modern digital productivity tools-including enterprise AI assistants (e.g., Gemini)-and basic troubleshooting for AI‑enhanced software and hardware.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Deployment & Setup: Configuring, deploying, taking inventory, and managing Windows and macOS desktop and laptop devices, including modern AI PC hardware standards (NPUs, elevated memory/GPU specs).
  • Technical Support: Diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing hardware, software, network connectivity, and peripheral issues on macOS, Windows, and iOS devices.
  • AI & Productivity Tool Assistance: Providing Tier 1 support and guidance for standard campus AI tools (e.g., Gemini, browser‑based generative AI tools), helping users troubleshoot access, account permissions, and basic integration issues.
  • Service Desk Operations: Delivering courteous support via phone, walk‑in Service Desk requests, and electronic ticketing software.
  • Software Installation: Installing and updating specialized software packages, browser plugins, and AI tool extensions on staff workstations, classroom computers, and student lab environments.
  • Asset Tracking & Documentation: Maintaining accurate hardware/software inventory records and documenting user solutions in the knowledge base.
  • Mission Alignment: Communicating courteously and working collaboratively, reflecting Christian values and supporting the university's diverse academic community.
  • Communicating effectively and courteously with others, including employees, students, and the public, in a spirit of teamwork, respect and customer service.
  • By actions, words, and lifestyle, be a Christian role model to students, whether through casual contact or in a formal supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated experience working cross‑culturally with respect, appreciation and humility.
  • Other duties as assigned.
We're looking for candidates who have:
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Windows, macOS and iOS hardware, and software systems.
  • The ability to extend strong customer service to a broad range of constituents.
  • Demonstrated experience with modern deployment and configuration tools for doing large‑scale machine deployments.
  • A basic practical understanding of generative AI technologies and enterprise productivity tools (e.g., Copilot, Gemini, ChatGPT).
  • An awareness of basic AI security, data privacy standards, and responsible AI usage policies within a school or enterprise environment.
  • A familiarity with application and desktop virtualization.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and configuring networks, servers and printers.
  • Manual dexterity needed to handle very small parts and tools.
  • A strong attention to detail along with the ability to develop and adhere to standardized processes.
  • The ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

Job information:
  • Hours Per Week: 40 hours (1.0 FTE) - Monday through Friday
  • Duration: This is a temporary position and will conclude within 6 months.
  • Primary Work Location: Newberg Campus
  • Working Conditions: Physical requirements are those of a normal office environment. Must have the ability to lift more than 25 pounds and perform any activities such as balancing, bending/stooping, climbing stairs, crouching, etc.
