Job summary

Sturdy Memorial in Attleboro, MA is seeking a Surgical Coordinator to serve as liaison between patients, surgeons, clinical staff, and hospital departments. You will manage scheduling and preoperative processes, obtain authorizations, referrals, and coordinate testing while ensuring timely, accurate care.

You will promote a positive patient experience, optimize scheduling efficiency, support physician productivity, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3-5 years in a medical office, surgical practice, ambulatory care, or similar healthcare setting.
• Strong verbal and written communication with patients, providers, staff, and external partners.
• Knowledge of insurance verification, referrals, prior authorizations, and scheduling processes.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities with high accuracy and organization.
• Ability to work with surgeons, schedulers, primary care providers, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Customer service and interpersonal skills to support patients.
• Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information professionally.
• Coordinate complex processes and resolve scheduling barriers.
• Work independently while managing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and schedule surgical procedures per physician, patient, OR, and organizational requirements.
• Communicate preoperative, operative, and postoperative information to patients and families.
• Collaborate with OR and procedural areas to align schedules.
• Manage physician block time utilization with the OR.
• Verify insurance coverage and benefits for scheduled services.
• Facilitate required prior authorizations and referrals.
• Assist with administrative tasks related to appeals, peer-to-peer reviews, and authorizations.
• Apply surgical scheduling protocols and requirements.
• Obtain medical records, imaging, tests, and clinical documentation for planning and anesthesia.
• Determine required preoperative testing and clearances.
• Assist patients with arranging clearance and optimization appointments.
• Arrange preoperative imaging, labs, and diagnostic services as needed.
• Monitor completion of preoperative requirements and follow up on outstanding items.
• Identify barriers and escalate as needed.
• Coordinate communication among patients, physicians, staff, OR, anesthesia, and other departments.
• Maintain accurate surgical scheduling and patient information in EMR systems.
• Process changes, cancellations, and rescheduling of procedures.
• Schedule postoperative appointments and ensure follow-up is arranged.
